A traditional Wisconsin supper club doesn't usually have a
lot of windows,has a dark
interior and a large bar. A supper
club traditionally serves supper, the evening meal ... dinner. Beverages flow easily and a variety of
old fashions (sweet or sour), Manhattans (sweet or dry), beer on tap and something and soda are
typical selections. The bartender
will ask if you'd like a cherry, olive, mushroom, Brussels sprout, all or none
of the above for your beverage.
There is usually a table nearby with cheeses and crackers and sometimes some liver paste. Depending on the establishment you are either served or you can serve yourself to these offerings. Menus are presented and until recently so were ashtrays. And so business begins. The heart of the supper club is the large bar where many social, political, and business events and decisions are made. So far, true to form we are in a SUPPER CLUB.
The supper club we chose to dine at is a Door County institution: MR. G'S SUPPER CLUB/LOGAN CREEK GRILLE. It is located at 5890 State Highway 57 Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin 54235. Half way between Sturgeon Bay and Baileys Harbor. Call 920-823-2112. Mr. G's is open for dinner Wednesday – Saturday at 5 pm. It is owned by the Geitner family. Prior to their purchase, Mr G's had been known and operated as the Paldora Supper Club and the Fernwood Gardens Ballroom.
Our group was seated quite promptly and began scanning the menus in front of us. The selections were extensive and quite traditional. The offerings were steaks of all kinds, tenderloin, rib eye, prime rib, Angus beef burger with various sauces ($9.95-$23.95). They have chops, chicken, pasta as well as nightly specials. The appetizers are quite traditional, cheese curds, onion rings, shrimp cocktail and the Wisconsin Vegetable Combo ($7.95). We didn't order it but assume that it's deep fried.
The children's menu is pedestrian and includes milk and fries with the selection of pizza, chicken nuggets and mac and cheese.
Our group had varied taste that night as were the selections made. One person ordered the Giant Cheese Ravioli ($12.95). The five raviolis were “stuffed” with five cheeses and served with a thick marinara and Parmesan cheese. It was presented nicely and my companion enjoyed it. Two selections of whitefish were chosen. It is fresh when available and delicately broiled ($17.95). The fish was accompanied by a salad and potato. The salad was nondescript and the potato was just that. The reviews were mixed. One diner enjoyed the broiled, hot whitefish, while another wished theirs too had been hot.
Another selection was the chicken Marsala ($16.95). It was tender and flavorful and had an appealing presentation. The chicken breast was topped with a Sicilian wine sauce with portabella mushrooms. The traditional perch and pork chop were also selected. The perch was lightly breaded and served hot with their house tartar sauce ($18.95). The pork chop was cooked to medium as requested and was tender (1 chop-$13.95). Both the entrees were served with the salad and choice of potato and were enjoyed. With all the selections of meat available an Angus beef burger was ordered ($9.95). This is a half pound ground beefpatty is grilled to order. It was asked if it could be topped off with sauteed mushrooms and it was, with abundance. The burger was cookedmedium-rare and enjoyed.
The wine that we chose for dinner was middle of the road in price and flavor (mid $20s). We did enjoy several bottles while we were waiting to be served. We had been informed by our wait person that she was the only one on this weekend evening and was very busy. She was.
