Lunch Bunch Enjoys Dinner at Donny's Glidden Lodge - Apr 18, 2012 - 8:45:48 AM

The Bar at Donny's Glidden Lodge.
The Lunch Bunch (plus a few more) decided to motor to Donny's Glidden Lodge Restaurant in Sturgeon Bay (4670 Glidden Drive, 920-746-9460, open year round). It is definitely a blast from the past, specifically 1930's. This building is all charm and character and walls that “wish they could talk”. It's a beautiful stone building situated on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Lunch Bunch Gathers at Sturgeon Bay's Mel's Place - Mar 21, 2012 - 8:40:00 AM

Mel's Place, Sturgeon Bay.
Babette has returned and apologizes for her absence.  Though her travels have kept her at a distance, she is most pleased to be back on solid Door County soil.  As she regroups and gathers her thoughts and words of her travels, adventures and mishaps, some will surely be shared with the readers.  Until then she is happy to be home, safe and sound and on an adventure to find establishments, sample their fares and share her thoughts.

The lunch bunch gathered for its first outing this year at Mel's Place in Sturgeon Bay.  Mel's Place (2011) is at an established restaurant location ... 308 South 3rd Ave ... previously the location of the Bluefront and Launch Cafes.  Mel's serves breakfast and lunch and is open seven days a week from 5 am - 2 pm.

Kimz Galley Cafe - Try it for the Old and the New - Jul 13, 2011 - 8:45:00 AM

Kimz Galley Cafe.
Sturgeon Bay has had its share of turnover in eating establishments.  Some come and go, and some, to their credit, reinvent themselves or their location, to the pleasure of their patrons.  KIMZ GALLEY CAFE is now located at 229 Louisiana Street in Sturgeon Bay; originally KIMZ was located on the Sawyer side of the city near the Steel Bridge.  KIMZ CAFE is in the BIG BLUE HOUSE on Louisiana Street near Associated Bank on 3rd Avenue.  This old downtown home has been remodeled to accommodate its new life's purpose.

A Comfortable, Homey Environment Found at Maggie's Cafe - Jun 29, 2011 - 8:54:15 AM

The moment I walked into Maggie's Cafe on Sturgeon Bay's West Side, I could sense the warmth and passion within the cozy restaurant.  Owner Jamie Stahl welcomed me with a bright smile and a handshake and proceeded to explain the cafe's ordering system and unique features.  She and her co-owner Carrie Anschutz have worked tirelessly since the cafe's opening on May first to provide a comfortable, homey environment for locals.

In fact, even the cafe's name demonstrates their desire to create a welcoming restaurant; both Jamie and Carrie had great-grandmothers named Maggie, which seems to be a quintessential family name.

Sturgeon Bay's Trattoria Dal Santo: A Culinary Gem - Jun 22, 2011 - 8:50:00 AM

Trattaria Dal Santo, downtown Sturgeon Bay
Trattoria Dal Santo is where we chose to dine on this rainy evening. It seemed appropriate to want something warm and comforting on a dreary damp night. Dal Santo is located at 147 N. 3rd Avenue in Sturgeon Bay. It serves dinner from 5:00 - 9:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 4:00 - 9:00 pm Friday thru Sunday. Reservations can be made by calling 920-743-6100. This is a gem in downtown Sturgeon Bay. It is within walking distance from the marinas, bed and breakfasts, and a short cab ride in town. Parking is on street and there is usually plenty available.

Mr. G's Supper Club ... A Door County Icon - May 24, 2011 - 8:45:00 AM

Mr. G's is a Door County icon
From the four corners of our very Midwestern state to the inner core of our cities to our very own Door County Peninsula, a SUPPER CLUB is a Wisconsin icon. The Wisconsin supper club is rich in tradition and has roots as deep as Lake Michigan.

A traditional Wisconsin supper club doesn't usually have a lot of windows, has a dark interior and a large bar. A supper club traditionally serves supper, the evening meal ... dinner.

Greystone Castle Pleases the Pub Grub Club - Apr 19, 2011 - 8:45:00 AM
Grey_Stone_Castle.jpg
The PUB GRUB CLUB ... THE LUNCH BUNCH ... who knows what's next. Tonight our pub grub club chose a long-standing institution on the historical west side of Sturgeon Bay.  The Greystone Castle is located at 8 N. Madison.

If you're looking for fine dining, silver, crystal, linens, and an expansive wine list, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for good solid Wisconsin fare that will satisfy all of the no-no's on the nutritional pyramid, you've come to the right place. If you're not familiar with the Greystone, it's located on the corner of Madison and Maple (between the old bridge and the new, new bridge).  It's a sports bar. No, not tennis, squash, golf or cricket but the hunting and fishing kind. The decor is très outdoor sportsman. There are lots of mounted things.

Bluefront Cafe, Sturgeon Bay: A Lunch Bunch Pick - Mar 22, 2011 - 8:35:00 AM
blue_front_cafe.jpg
Owners/chefs Susan Guthrie and Patrick Barbercheck have certainly brought something delightful to Sturgeon Bay's historic west side.  Their desire to create eclectic, healthy and delicious food from seasonal, regional and organic selections when available makes it very appealing.

The Lunch Bunch is a gang of pals who more than willingly participate in the sampling of Door County's finest and not so finest restaurants, pubs, bars, bistros, taverns and take away.  We venture into new as well as the established eateries.  Today we're at the Bluefront Cafe in Sturgeon Bay.
