Today? Not so much. I see many, many people whose values are arbitrary, with relationships that are arbitrary (‘til boredom do us part), and values that are arbitrary. They seek purpose and a sense of belonging in their favorite coffee shop, a favorite sports team, the right fashion style, or the god of fitness. And they live – if not in daily pain – lost and alone much of the time. They line up to talk to psychologists (“I just don’t feel happy.”) and turn to mind-numbing drugs in droves. They abandon faith in anything higher than a political or sports hero or their own ego-centric, limited intelligence. Their gods are arbitrary, fleeting … difficult to find on the morning after. My point: I personally have tried many of these alternate gods. After years of honest, skeptical searching, I found that there is only One, the OTG. (And, no, I do not confuse religion with faith; the two are not necessarily the same.) The One True God makes sense of a world devoid of sense; He fills me up with permanent, consistent joy (the water of eternal life); He provides meaning, balance, and purpose; and He offers not submission, slavery or imprisonment … but freedom, life and inner peace beyond the imagination. The OTG is one awesome God! “When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in their local dialect, ‘These men are gods in human form!’ “But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul Heard what was happening, they tore their clothing in dismay and ran out among the people shouting, ‘Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings – just like you.’” -Acts 14:11, 14-15 I have gotten in the habit of inviting avowed atheists (flat-out non-believers) to back away from such a confident, improvable position. I suggest instead: “Yes, science and logic are real, but I encourage you to look beyond that to the creator of such logic. Keep an open mind to other possibilities. So, rather than being an atheist (There is NO God! Period!), try being an agnostic (‘I’m not sure; I am still sifting through the evidence and will let you know if I find anything for sure.’) Or try on deism (I know there is a Creator because of the orderliness of the universe. Whether or not he cares about me, well, that’s another subject.’)” That way, if there is a One True God, you’re giving Him a chance to prove His case … in His own sweet time. And yes, He will.
