Last evening I drove 200 miles through Kansas’ Tornado Alley, and I was surrounded by wild winds and dark, roiling clouds the whole time. At one point, as the storms and I raced on a parallel northeasterly route between Garden City and Salina, I was tearing along beside huge wind turbines that were shutting down, literally, as I was passing them one by one. (To avoid being damaged in high winds, turbines are programmed to stop when winds reach a certain speed.) With ferocious winds hitting me broadside and dodging small debris (I got to see my first tumble weeds as they flew by), I watched the turbines ahead of me spinning and behind me locked down. Not all that sure where I was in terms of counties, I monitored the radio and kept passing by or through towns that were just falling under tornado warning alerts, while also hearing about serious damage and flooding in towns I’d just been through, as I kept just minutes ahead of the storm. When I pulled into my motel in Salina – never having been hit by a single drop of rain on route – I saw on the lobby’s television screen that I had traveled the entire time in a pocket of dry weather surrounded on three sides by violent storms. When the rain and wind did finally catch up to me, I was safely in my hotel a good 20 minutes. Whew! I never thought driving across Kansas could be so invigorating. My point? Not sure. However, I never felt in danger, even though ten minutes slower or a few miles difference in my route would have put me in the heart of some serious weather. Thinking back on it, I felt sort of like Daniel in the lions’ den, protected, safely in God’s pocket. A nice feeling. And so much for feeling booted off the turnip truck. – jri “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” Psalm 62:5-8 How often do we walk through our lives oblivious to the dangers surrounding us or thinking that God has abandoned us? He has not. Even though we do not always see His grace and blessings, they are with us always. God bless and cherish this day. It is a gift.
