It Takes Faith to Believe

As a young girl, my mother could not figure out where eggs came from. After her family told her, she still didn’t believe, even though she spent a lot of time turning over and over and inspecting one of their poor egg-laying hens (which, I suspect, pretty soon quit laying altogether after such maulings). I have friends like that when it comes to their skepticism. They scoff at the whole idea of miracles, both past and present, convinced that only the gullible and naïve would believe. (“Dividing of loaves and fishes? Yeah, right! Miracles in our lifetimes? Never seen one!”) Meanwhile, I see miracles everywhere I turn, no not in the forms of burning bushes and spontaneous cures, or bodacious thunderclaps, but in wisps of gentleness, occasional insights, and an unexpected knowing beyond knowing now and then that comes from grace. Hard to explain, but they are everywhere, and they are real. My point: It seems to me that faith does not come from miracles; miracles come from faith. So, we should not so much demand a free demo from the miracle worker, but instead simply pray for faith. Then the miracles, which are everywhere, will become apparent. “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Jesus Christ on the cross) Matthew 15:34 I like the quote above because it represents the darkest time for Christ’s followers, though it is actually the time, or so I’ve been told, when Jesus was about to announce that His job is done here and He is ready to commend his spirit into the Father’s hands. Either way, it is a time that only a miracle could fix … and, surprise, we got one. However, while we believe in the resurrection, nonbelievers will continue to not see it … to not get it. It takes faith to believe! God bless you this day, and keep the faith.
