Poodie Bonin was recognized as the volunteer with the most hours in 2010. Her client? Bagel.
Most hours in 2010 as an Adoption Specialist was Ron Retzak. Sumac is loving the attention!
Volunteers are the lifeblood of any non-profit organization, and the Door County Humane Society is no exception. At the recent annual meeting and volunteer recognition dinner at the Draft Haus in Sturgeon Bay, the board of directors gave heartfelt thanks and an abundance of praise for the dozens of dedicated men and women who help care for and support our county's homeless four-leggers.
A record year for shelter activity, 2010 saw increases in the intake of cats and dogs. As a much-needed new building continues to be in the planning stages, the present facility pushes the envelope for animal care. However, shelter staff and volunteers have proved to be a resourceful and diligent group of folks, and they find ways to make every animal guest feel welcome, get the care he or she needs, get proper exercise, eat well, and find a forever home.
Marilyn Jensen, Board President, summed it up very well before presenting numerous awards to very deserving volunteers. "We love what you do for us, and we simply couldn't do what we do for animals without your wonderful help", she remarked. Executive Director Carrie Counihan added that "you shelter volunteers make the job of our paid staff so much easier, and you come up with solutions that make life good for the dogs and cats in our care."
Counihan mentioned that the work of every single volunteer deserves mention, and that it was difficult to identify which folks would actually receive a specific award. It came down to looking carefully at hours worked during the past year, and length of service doing a special task at the shelter.
Marilyn Jensen and Carrie Counihan address the volunteers.
