Door County Humane Society's Bark in the Park Set for Saturday, August 27

Dogs and their owners walking to help homeless animals is the purpose of "Bark in the Park", but if you ask the many bright-eyed, tailing-wagging participants, they are in Sunset Park to have fun. The annual "Bark in the Park" fundraiser for the Door County Humane Society will take place in Sunset Park, on 3rd Avenue in Sturgeon Bay, on Saturday, August 27. It's the one day of the year that dogs are allowed in the city park, and all varieties, shapes, and sizes of dogs make the most of that special treat. According to shelter’s Executive Director Carrie Counihan, the fundraising goal this year is $17,000.
“I really love this event,” said Carrie Counihan, DCHS’s executive director. “It’s a chance to truly celebrate our dogs, and we get to meet the animals who are so dear to our members. Recent adopters are often there as well, and it’s a lot of fun to see how well they’re doing with the additions to their families.”
Registration opens at 9 a.m. For $25 per person or $50 per family, participants receive a commemorative T-shirt, goody bag, and lunch. The walk begins at 9:45 a.m. Setting the pace this year will be baby camel Harley Junior owned by Lisa & Ken Jeansonne. Many sponsors and supporters set up booths around the park, and look forward to talking with dog owners. A favorite for dogs after the 2-mile walk is the wading pool filled with tennis balls. New this year will be pet photos with Fran Klotz. Enhancing the festivities are Master of Ceremonies Chuck Lakefield, live music by Mike and Bob Starr, and the award announcements of top pledgers. Each dog gets a prize as well.
“Bark” has been an annual event since the shelter was organized; for the past five years, Mary Ellen Dreutzer has chaired the organizing committee.
Counihan emphasized that Door County visitors and seasonal residents also are welcome for the daylong celebration. “Bark in the Park’ is so special because it gives the entire Door County community a chance to share our love of our four-legged family members and friends while raising money for the local shelter,” she said. “And whether you live here year-round, part-time or elsewhere and have chosen to visit us for your holiday, you’re part of our community.
“It takes $900 per day to continue the shelter operations, yet less than 5 percent of our funding comes from government sources,” Counihan noted. “Events like ‘Bark in the Park’ are essential components of our yearly calendar, because we do rely on the generosity of our members and friends to continue our mission here — to care for our peninsula’s dogs and cats while we find their owners or secure new, loving homes for them.”
