$20.12 Cat Adoption Fee Announced by Humane Society

What better way to begin a new year than with a cat companion? To encourage an adoption decision, the Door County Humane Society is dropping the cat adoption fee to an historic low of $20.12 for the month of January 2012. Carrie Counihan explained, “We’ve resolved to find homes for a significant number of the 110 cats at the shelter. Sometimes an extra little incentive is all that’s needed for a family to make the adoption decision. We’re trying something new by cutting the cat adoption cost by more than 75%.” The special lowered fee is offered on cats two years or older. Many dozens of cats currently in residence at DCHS are eligible. Each has received hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in vaccinations, veterinary care, staff attention, and food. Only spayed or neutered cats that are completely up-to-date on shots will be adopted to new homes. “With holiday travel and activities concluded, January is a perfect time to bring a homeless animal into your family,” Counihan said. “And the $70 cost savings will cover immediate expenditures like a bed, food, bowls, litter box & litter supply, and a treat for your new cat.” The Humane Society had an extraordinarily active year with cat intake setting new records. The number of strays has escalated, but the biggest increase is in surrendered animals. It is the mission of DCHS to find homes for every adoptable animal and until then offer a clean, safe, comfortable cage. Several cats have been at the shelter since 2009, and a large number from 2010. The Door County Humane Society is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:00pm for visits and adoptions. Families are encouraged to come together to meet all the cats who qualify for the $20.12 adoption special. Applications may be downloaded from the DCHS website (www.dooranimals.com) or completed at the shelter. References are checked prior to approval of an adoption.
Also effective on January 1, 2012, the Humane Society announces an increase in adoption fees. Cat adoption now is $90, up from $85 while the dog adoption cost has been raised $30 to $150. These cost increases mirror the spiraling cost of care but are still very competitive with other Northeast Wisconsin rescue shelters. The Door County Humane Society is a 501 (c ) (3) non-profit, relying on community donations for 95% of its annual budget.
