Sturgeon Bay High School Student Council raises money for United Way
of Door County
On Thursday, December 22, the students at
Sturgeon Bay High School participated in a Talent Show. Prior to having the Talent Show the
Student Council was required to raise money to support local charities. This year one of the charities that the
Student Council choice to support is United Way of Door County. Pictured are David Tauber, Jr. and
Rebecca Fredrickson with a check for $600 for United Way. David and Rebecca are students at
Sturgeon Bay High School and members of the United Way of Door County Board of
Directors.

Bed & Breakfast Christmas Walk Proceeds go to United Way of Door
County
On Sunday, December 4, a few of the Bed &
Breakfasts in Sturgeon Bay participated in the Annual B&B Christmas Walk,
with all proceeds going to United Way of Door County. The following week Kelly Hellman, Inn at Cedar Crossing,
presented a check to Amy Kohnle, executive director of United Way of Door
County, for $607.50. Thank you to
all those who participated in the B&B Christmas Walk.
United Way of Door County Campaign Update
United Way of Door County has announced that, as of Thursday, December 29th, that the 2011 annual fundraising campaign is at 85.8%. A little more than $65,000 is still needed to empower residents of Door County in 2012.
A donation to United Way will be invested in nonprofit programs focusing on Basic Needs, Community Wellness, Health Care, and Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse.

All pledges and donations must be postmarked no later than January 7.
The money that is raised in Door County stays in Door County to help nearly 7,000 people from Brussels to Washington Island and all areas in-between, who receive assistance from 42 human service programs. The staff and volunteers at those agencies thank you for your support of their work through your donation to United Way of Door County.
First Friday Launches on January 6th
More than 20 downtown Sturgeon Bay businesses will extend their hours on January 6th as the United Way of Door County launches the 2012 First Fridays in Sturgeon Bay. The first Friday of each month (second Friday in April due to Easter) will offer area residents the opportunity to enjoy downtown Sturgeon Bay with many shops remaining open until 8 pm. Participating businesses include shops on Jefferson Street, Third Avenue and Madison Avenue.

The goals of these monthly events are to increase business traffic in downtown Sturgeon Bay and to increase awareness of our local non-profit organizations. United Way of Door County will be the featured non-profit for January followed by the Wellness Center in February. Subsequent months will feature FISC, Sexual Assault Center, HELP, The Community’s Garden, Women’s Employment Project (WEP), Neighbor-to-Neighbor, the Door County Maritime Museum, and many more. Information on the organizations will be available at various locations throughout the shopping district.
Untitled Used and Rare Books will celebrate its first anniversary by initiating First Friday Poetry Readings. Readings will take place between 5 and 8 pm with coffee and tea available. Local residents are invited to read from their own works or those they love during the poetry and spoken word open mic. A salon will follow with wine and cheese.
