Do Blue Jays Migrate ... or Not?

Many of the birds I usually see in Door County are gone. They migrated south for the winter months. But I keep seeing lots and lots of Blue Jays and some other types of birds at the feeder in our backyard. Why are these birds still here and do they stay all winter? Your friend, Margaret Sturgeon Bay
Dear Margaret,
I love Blue Jays! I love their beautiful blue color and the pretty sounds that they make. I spent some time researching them just for you and here is some information about their migrating habits (courtesy of www.allaboutbirds.org):
Thousands of Blue Jays migrate in flocks along the Great Lakes and Atlantic coasts, but much about their migration remains a mystery. Some are present throughout winter in all parts of their range. Young jays may be more likely to migrate than adults, but many adults also migrate. Some individual jays migrate south one year, stay north the next winter, and then migrate south again the next year. No one has worked out why they migrate when they do. So Blue Jays are a true mystery! For more information, you can visit www.allaboutbirds.org to find some really cool facts about them. There is even a recording of a Blue Jays song that you can listen to! Keep up your interest in birds, Margaret! Your friend, Skipper the Otter
