To all my fans!
Dear Skipper,

I'm 12 and I need help making some New Year's Resolutions. My parents are making some, but I really don't know how to do this. I thought maybe if you shared yours I could get some good ideas. So what are yours? And are there some that would work for a girl my age?
Love, Jessica

Dear Jessica,
I am so glad that you want to make New Year’s Resolutions!  It is good to look at your life and see what things you are doing that you really like and what things you want to add to your life.  There may also be things that you are doing that you wish you would not do (like say unkind things to a classmate or brother or sister).  Here are some tips for making New Year’s Resolutions:

1. Take an honest look at yourself and make a list of all of the things you like about yourself.
2. Make a list of things you would like to stop doing.
3. Think of 3-5 people that you really admire and think about what they do that makes you feel good.
4. Make a list of habits you would like to have that are similar to the people you admire.
5. In order to make a Resolution that you can keep, it helps to list measurable tasks.  For example, instead of setting a goal of reading more often, decide that you would like to read for 30 minutes 3 times per week.
6. Charting your progress can really help you succeed.
7. Throughout the year, keep checking your list to make sure that you are keeping up with your goals!

On my New Year’s Resolution List is:

1. Spend more time with my family (two activities each week with them).
2. Be involved in more service projects (one service project per month).
3. Use kinder language (think before I talk).
4. Keep my fur cleaner (clean every morning and night).
5. Read every night before bed (30 minutes).

Good luck with your New Year’s Resolutions List, Jessica!  Have a wonderful 2012!

Your friend,
Skipper the Otter
