Dear Skipper:

I think you are cool.

Since you are outdoors a lot of the time, you probably see quite a few rainbows. I am wondering what causes a rainbow. Sometimes they are in the sky after it rains.
Why do we see them and why are there so many nice colors?

Your friend,
Jessica, Sturgeon Bay
Age 8

Dear Jessica,

Thanks for the compliment and for stopping by my site to ask me a question.

Rainbows are so neat, aren’t they?  Here are some interesting facts about rainbows:

·A rainbow is an arc that shows all the colors, with their different wavelengths, that make up the light you can see.
·Seven colors make up a rainbow, and they always appear in the same order: red, with the longest wavelength, is on the top, followed by orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, which has the shortest wavelength.
·A good way to remember the order of those colors is by taking the first letter of each to spell the made up name, "ROY G. BIV," pronounced "roy-jee-biv."
· A rainbow occurs when sunlight passes through water droplets and is  bent by their rounded shape into separate wavelengths.
·There is a specially cut piece of glass, called a prism, that can bend light and show a rainbow, too.
·Rainbows can sometimes be spotted in the spray of lawn sprinklers and in the mist of waterfalls.
·Rainbows can be seen in the sky during a rain shower when the sun is still shining. A rainbow appears in the part of the sky opposite the sun.
·Because the sun must also be low in the sky, late afternoon is the best time to look for a rainbow if the day has been sunny with a few short rain showers or thunderstorms.

I love seeing a rainbow after it rains.  Be sure to check out your window after the next storm to see the beautiful colors!  Hopefully this snow will melt and “April showers will bring May flowers”!

Your friend,
Skipper
