Kids Ask Skipper - Are There Wolves in Door County?
By Skipper the Otter

Dear Skipper, I am very happy to read that a non-human creature is going to be writing stories and publishing them on the web.
So here is my question. When I go hiking or playing in some of the wilder places in Door County, do you think I might see or get chased by a wolf? Joey Sturgeon Bay
Dear Joey, Good question! There is some mixed information about wolves being in Door County over the past decade. Evidence of wolves being here has trickled in over the past few years from people who’ve reported to
have heard howls or seen tracks. But Door County is a very unlikely place to find a wolf for 2 different reasons. One, wolves are normally found in uninhabited areas and Door County is a fairly inhabited place. Two, since Door County is actually an island, the only way for a wolf to get into our county is for it to walk over the bridge or, to cross over the ice in the winter from Michigan’s Menominee County (which would be about a 14 mile walk). The only confirmed wolf sighting was in May of 2003 (unfortunately, that wolf, who was protected by law due to endangerment, was accidentally killed by a hunter who mistook the animal for a coyote). The most important thing about hiking is to be prepared and to feel comfortable out in the woods. Animals can sense fear, so don’t forget to have fun! The top 5 hiking tips for kids are (courtesy of Bukisa.com): 1) Wear proper shoes and clothing. 2) Bring a hiking stick. 3) Plan your route. 4) Bring healthy drinks and snacks. 5) Have a proper first aid kit. Also, be sure to stay on the trails in order to preserve the land as much as possible. This will help keep you safe from accidentally startling and angering a wild animal. What you WILL find on a hike in Door County is beautiful landscapes, small critters, and friendly people. Enjoy your hike! Your friend, Skipper
