Is it true that otters can walk on land and swim in water? Is that fun? Your friend, Kyle Grade 1, Algoma Dear Kyle: Yes! It is true, otters like me are fine on land and in the water. We are semi-aquatic and have thick fur to keep us warm in the cold air and in cold water. We can paddle in the water and on land we can walk, run, bound, and slide! We are natural swimmers, and our mom introduces us to the water when we're old enough. Here's some information from our friends at Wikipedia ... "The river otter, a member of the weasel family, is equally versatile in the water and on land. The otter establishes a burrow close to the water's edge in river, lake, swamp, coastal shoreline, tidal flat, or estuary ecosystems. Their dens have many tunnel openings—one of which generally allows the otter to enter and exit the body of water. Female otters give birth in these underground burrows, producing litters of one to six young." We do worry a bit about environmental pollution such as nasty stuff in the water. It's not good for us. Please don't throw or spill junk into the water .. and please tell other humans to be respectful of our natural environment too. And yes, it is fun to be able to go into the water and swim a lot and then get back on land and have a blast with my friends. I'm glad you wrote to me and am thrilled that you are interested in learning about us otters. Happy spring to you!
