Dear Skipper,
My parents just got me a cell phone so I can stay in touch with them when at school and especially during after school activities. I'm a freshman this year. Do you think it's ok to send text messages to my friends or even my mom during class? Some kids do this a lot and I am just wondering. By the way, I love your glasses ... you look a little like Harry Potter.
Thank you for your advice.

Your friend,
Brianna, Green Bay

Dear Brianna,

Thanks for your comments about my glasses.  I feel so honored to be

compared to one of my favorite characters, Harry Potter!

Depending on what school you go to, the rules about texting are
different, but I do know that texting in class is not allowed anywhere.   I think it is great to stay connected with your parents and friends but please do so when the school permits.  I know that it might be tempting to text during class (especially if other kids are doing it) but you can’t be focused on your studies and be trying to text at the same time.  You can text before and after school and still keep connected with the ones that you care about.

There are many ways to stay connected with family and friends that can be done in between classes, after school or on the weekend.  You can make plans to have family time or to hang out with your friends earlier in the week, and then you can look forward to the weekend when you have time to carry out those plans.  Of course, my favorite thing to do with friends or family is to be outside and enjoy nature.  It may seem harder to do that in the winter but, there are many fun activities to do in the snow.

Your friend,
Skipper
