Kids Ask Skipper - Trouble on the Playground
By Skipper the Door County Otter
Mar 8, 2011 - 6:56:00 AM
Our fourth grade class goes out to recess every day, and a bunch of us girls like to play a special game with a ball on the parts of the playground that are not full of snow. The boys usually make snow forts but now there is not enough snow left to do that. So, three of them are always running through our spot and disrupting our game. They go back and forth doing this until the playground supervisor yells at them. But they keep doing it every day this week and it is very annoying. What do you think we should do? One girl thinks we should go over and wreck their snow fort, but it is melting anyway.
Your friend,
Jessica, Fish Creek
Dear Jessica,
Hmm, it sounds very frustrating to have your game interrupted over and over every day at recess. It looks like the boys might be feeling left out of your game. I would first try to invite them to play with you. You might be able to all have fun playing together! How about inventing a new game for everyone to play? There are some neat books you can get at the library with suggestions of cooperative games. These kinds of games focus on working together instead of competition and can leave everyone feeling really good. Ask your librarian to help you search for cooperative games and see what you find.
If they won’t play with you, and are still trying to mess up your game, then maybe you can go talk to the playground supervisor. Maybe you could play your game right near the supervisor where he or she can keep an eye on you to make sure the boys stay away from your game.
I do know that trying to get revenge isn’t going to help anything. Although it might be tempting to go and wreck their snow fort, it will only help to make them want to disrupt your ball game even more, and also could get you into trouble. I hope that it works out so you can still have fun at recess. Good luck!
