School is Starting and I am Nervous
By Skipper the Door County Otter

I am starting school next week and I am really nervous. What if the work is too hard and I do not do well in school? I am worried about my grades. I want to do well, but I am scared.
Your nervous friend,
Billy, age 12
Dear Billy,
I know how you feel. Everyone gets nervous sometimes, even otters like me! The best thing that you can do when you are nervous is to focus on being brave. Take deep breaths when you are feeling nervous and tell yourself nice, encouraging things. Remind yourself of past successes you have had with learning and use that to make yourself strong.
You can also make a plan with your parents of how you are going to study at home. If you break your homework into chunks and check off a list as you go, it can help you be organized and make you feel like you are doing well! Also, have a plan of what to do if you start to struggle. If something gets confusing, you can ask your parents or your teachers for help. Keep working at it, even if you struggle, and try to feel happy about your efforts.
All of these things can help you do well in school. Also, you can try to make things fun by making a game out of studying. Good luck!
