So You Have Squirrels in Your Birdfeeder?

Dear Skipper, We like to see all the birds that come to our bird feeder, especially in the winter. Our cats enjoy watching! But we have squirrels that come and eat all the birdseed in 30 seconds. They are big pigs. No matter what we do they seem to find their way into the feeders. Do you have any ideas about how to solve this problem without being mean to the squirrels or to the birds? Love Cynnie Greene, Maine
Dear Cynnie, First of all, thanks for having a bird feeder in your backyard to help feed the birds! I have several good friends that are birds and they tell me all the time about how much they love it when someone puts a bird feeder in their backyard! But they have also told me about those pig-like squirrels. Hmm. It sounds like a tough problem. So I got on my computer and did some research for you and I found this great article on how to squirrel-proof your bird feeders: http://birding.about.com/od/birdfeeders/a/squirrelprooffeeder.htm There are a lot of good ideas on that website with some great tips that involve being kind to the birds and to the squirrels, but also keeping the pesky squirrels away from the birds. Please check it out! Good luck, Cynnie! Your friend, Skipper the Otter
