When
James Valcq and I assumed our roles as the new directors of Third
Avenue Playhouse on October 1 of last year, we felt like two of the
luckiest guys on Earth. We were asked to move to a place we love in
order to do a job we love, leading TAP into the future. It is an
exciting opportunity, but TAP is not without its challenges.
The economy has not been kind to the arts anymore than it has been to any other business or family trying to make ends meet.
In light of some of the comments we’ve seen and
heard concerning the design of the proposed Maritime Observation Tower,
I thought it might be beneficial to offer some additional background
information. First and foremost, the Maritime Museum desires the design
to be both striking and blend architecturally with the maritime
appearance of the existing building. The design is intended to remind
the visitor/viewer of several historic tower structures prevalent on the
Great Lakes and important to the maritime heritage and history of the
area. It will incorporate architectural elements found in maritime
signal towers, lighthouses, and the watch towers integral to the
life-saving stations that dotted the shoreline.
Dear Editor: In reference to your story about the founding of Earth Day by then Senator Gaylord Nelson (Article), it
was started by Senator Nelson AND Congressman Pete McCloskey, a
Republican from California. McCloskey was one of that breed of
Republicans that is long gone: pro civil rights, pro-environment,
anti-unnecessary wars, pro small business,
pro local government.
There's an old joke that says a Calvinist is someone who lives in
constant dread that someone somewhere might be having fun. In that
respect then, a Tea Party Person could be defined as someone who lives
in constant dread that someone somewhere might be receiving a government
subsidy they don't deserve. Unless of course it is them, in which case
it becomes, at least in their mind, the rightful distribution of
taxpayer resources.
