Lecture: Chinese Politics On Saturday, February 9, at 9 a.m., the DCA’s Distinguished Lecture Series will offer a lecture entitled “Recent Trends in Chinese Politics,” presented by Dr. Wayne Patterson, professor of history at St. Norbert College. In his lecture, Dr. Patterson will explore the political, economic, and social changes that China has undergone in recent years. Some of the topics to be covered include "Red Capitalists," "Netizens," the "New Left," migrant workers, farmers, and local corruption. Patterson’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations encouraged) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Apple Creek Resort. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase. Coffeehouse Concert: Freedy Johnston On Saturday, February 9, at 7 p.m., DCA will present acclaimed singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston in a mainstage Coffeehouse Concert. The Madison-and New York City-based Johnston is often described as “a songwriter's songwriter.” Packing a punch that is both intellectual and visceral, Johnston’s songs have been praised by critics and fans alike. In the early 1990s, Rolling Stone and Spin hailed his album Can You Fly as a masterpiece. Robert Christgau called it “a perfect album.” Its success led to a major label deal with Elektra, for whom Johnston released This Perfect World in 1994.
Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase at the concert, which is sponsored by the Cordon Family Foundation. Tickets for Johnston’s concert range from $16-18. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through the DCA box office, located on Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org. © Copyright 2013 by DoorCountyTravelersJournal.com
