I've been slacking for the past several weeks, probably much to everyone's relief ... A week and a half ago I purchased a mobile home near my mom's home.  Between my two jobs and working a bit here and there on my house, I've had very little time to sit and think of silly stuff to write about my favorite subjects, Winnie and Toby.

This morning, while en route to our corner destination and back, it hit me like a ton of bricks and then I had to write it down.  I didn't have time before work so it had to wait till after.  I had almost forgotten my intention to create another journal entry for the dogs, and then I stood face to face with my computer and it immediately flooded my head.  While I still have my email up and running, I thought I'd share.  Lucky lucky you.

I got the brilliant idea that maybe I should watch Toby for a change to see if I can pick up his perspective on anything.  Winnie is all about having fun and running and barking and playing.  Toby is much more serious.

If you’ve ever seen the musical, The Music Man, then you would remember the Pick A Little Ladies.  They had a song in the play and it was quite comical.  It was made to make the viewer think these were a bunch of hens pecking at everyone.  While I was watching Toby, my mind started to wander.  If it ever leaves me, I’m in trouble.

I spent the afternoon with a friend yesterday and we were reminiscing about the time we were in a production of the Music Man several years ago.  I suppose that was enough to spur my delirious mind into action. The Pick A Little song popped into my head with different words to suit Toby.

Sniff a little, pee a little, sniff a little, pee a little, sniff sniff sniff, sniff a lot, pee a little more ...

Well, maybe I should stick to reading a nice book and drinking my coffee. I have another friend who reminds me that thinking can be dangerous if it involves me.

However, without fail, on the walk Winnie was her usual rowdy self.  She was all over the place having the time of her life as only Winnie can.  In the course of all that frivolity, her leash caught Toby under the tail and half lifted him, and the other half of the lift was a jump from his surprise at being goosed in such fashion.  The look he gave her was utterly indignant.   She could really care less.  Pretty soon she took off after a birdie she saw in the grass (she hasn’t figured out that she can’t fly and birdies are such fun to go after).  She passed in front of Toby and thwacked him upside the ear with her leash again.  He hit the ground like Chicken Little thinking a piece of sky had just hit him.  He shook his ears back into their proper position and continued on.  After that second swipe with the leash, every time Winnie got remotely close to him, he was cowering and sidestepping to stay away from her.

About that time, my wandering mind got at it again.  If I had to tell a story about Toby it would include a morning to night detail that would include his daily survival of his tormentor.  Thus the following verse.  I call it Toby’s Lament.

TOBY’S LAMENT

Don’t nobb my tail with your leash,
It picks me up off my back feet.
It startles my mind
To be nobbed from behind,
So don’t nobb my tail with your leash.

Don’t thwack my ear with your rope.
It makes me to look quite a dope.
I take most in stride,
'cept to be smacked from the side
Please don’t thwack my ear with your rope.

Don’t bite my leg when we run
I also like having some fun.
Your teeth smart my bones
Please leave me alone
And don’t bite my leg when we run.

Don’t pounce on me in the hall.
You pushed me up tight to the wall.
It’s been a long day,
So please go away.
Don’t pounce on me in the hall.

Don’t hog the covers in bed.
I like them up over my head.
I’ll sleep until dawn
And I won’t even yawn
If you don’t hog the covers in bed.

That pretty much sums up a typical day for Toby.  The 3 years between the two dogs makes quite a difference when it comes to mischief.  Like I stated before, Winnie is all fun and games.  Toby is much more interested in just being near his favorite humans, and that would be Jarrad and myself.   He would lie in my arms all day if I would just sit in the chair and hold him.  He and Winnie are really soul mates, but sometimes I think he would like it if she would just grow up.  As for myself, I like the opposite end of the poles that I have with the two different personalities.  It sure makes for some interesting and most times hilarious adventures.
