Coffee and Art Come Together at GT Coffee in Gills Rock

Coffee shop owners, cousins Sarah and Katie Janquart
All coffee shops have a personality, and GT Coffee’s personality is evident before you even walk in the door. There is art on the porch and walls; and in addition to a sign announcing ‘GT Coffee’ there is a big sign that says ‘ART’. It’s easy to spot this place, since there is a large flag flying on the west side of Hwy. 42 with the word ‘ART’ on it. The gray and white building makes it the perfect display for the interesting and visually arresting outside art available in the gallery. The art is not confined to the walls and pedestals here, the coffee, the service and the food reach the same level of creativity.
Attached to Charlene’s Gallery Ten, a contemporary art space, the coffee shop’s walls are also filled with small and large works of art, much of it in the coffee theme or lighthearted and whimsical. Did I mention there is great coffee here which you can sip while you check out the contemporary art? One of my favorite places to enjoy this spot is outside on the deck at one of the umbrella tables. The service here is friendly, and it won’t take long for you to understand why this is a popular place to go for coffee or lunch.
GT Coffee, near Gills Rock
Of course, the coffee is why we go, and the baked goods, all made from scratch, is why we return. The owners, cousins Katie and Sarah Janquart, know how to turn a customer into a lifelong friend, carrying on the tradition of the founder, Dewey Risenhoover and his wife Charlene Berg, founders and owners and now Katie and Sarah’s mentors.
This space is both cozy and airy, perhaps due to the clearstory windows above the tables and stools and comfy chairs. There’s plenty of light so you can write or read, there’s a television so you can grab a bit of news and free wifi and a computer to rent for 15 minutes to check your email, and it’s a great place to find out what the locals know, from the weather to the best restaurant to the best park to find wildflowers.
Coffee and art - the perfect blend!
In the hallway between the coffee shop and the art gallery is a small book store and video rental along with a grand collection of antiques, some of which are also for sale.
Katie fell in love with the coffee, and Dewey and Char, and then fell into the business first as an employee and then as co-owner, with her cousin Sarah, of the coffee shop. Their future plans include ownership of the art gallery as well.
Breakfast specialties include: mini-quiches, giant bran muffins and chocolate chip cookies, fresh fruit, smoothies and Alterra Coffee. Their hours are daily from 8-5 with Tuesdays 8-3.
