Junior the Camel pauses for a photo op!
The Door County Humane Society's Annual Bark in the Park 2011 will leave lasting memories in the minds of its many participants, which included about 100 humans, 60 dogs, 3 cats, and 1 camel. How does a cat participate in the promenade around the park? You'll have to check out the video later in this article to find out!

Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay was a great place to be on Saturday, August 27. The weather was perfect, with temperatures in the high 70's, partly sunny skies, and a light breeze. Plus, it's the only day of the year when pets can set their footpaws upon the park grounds. With vendor, food, and music tents all in place, the day quickly brought family fun to all - no matter how many feet you had. Entertainment was provided by Mike and Bob Starr's "Cover League" duo. Chuck Lakefield of radio station 94.3/99.7 FM "The Drive" was master of ceremonies.

A tradition since the establishment of the Door County Humane Society, this late summer event has been increasingly successful as more and more humans donate and/or walk the course around the park, led by the Humane Society's mascot, Junior the Camel. Junior is really Harley Junior, the youthful successor to Harley the Camel, who led the group in prior years before his untimely passing last year.

The troops get ready to walk!
Junior hit his stride right away, stepping out in a rather majestic fashion reminiscent of desert caravan camels that were his ancestors. He was very ably assisted in the event by over 25 human volunteers that saw to every detail of planning and executing a well-orchestrated program. There wasn't a dull moment as everyone had a chance to visit, exercise, eat, drink, and be merry.

It should be noted that Junior himself had a full pledge card to raise funds for the operating expenses of the shelter. He spent a few days in Fish Creek "working the crowd", so to speak, which isn't too difficult when you're a camel hanging out on the grass next to the J. Jeffrey Taylor Jewelry and Fine Art store. All he needed was a bucket with a sign asking for a donation and a ride provided by his owners Lisa and Ken Jeansonne of Cajun Acres near Carlsville.

The event has been headed up since 2006 by the secretary of the board of directors of the organization, Mary Ellen Dreutzer, and executive director Carrie Counihan. This year's fund-raising goal was exceeded, with over $17,000 raised to care for the homeless animals and to help them find their forever homes.

Counihan expressed her appreciation to all donors and participants. She tells us: "Bark in the Park has an amazing following year after year! It is a day to celebrate why we do what we do as we gather animal lovers from the region for a day of fun and raising money for our Shelter.  We look forward to it each year, and this year was one of our best by far! The addition of the pet portraits was a lot of fun, our vendors all reported having a wonderful day, and pet psychic Gale Ritchey was booked with appointments the entire time, even after the event was over."

Now sit back, relax, crank up the audio, and take 4 minutes of your day to see some of the happiest creatures in Door County!
