Find Your Treasure at Julie's Upscale Resale in Sister Bay

For over twenty years I have been a tourist to Door County. This June my family and I will become permanent year around residents in Sister Bay. Currently, I consider myself a resident/tourist. I hope that my knowledge as a resident, paired with my vacationer’s appreciation and perspective, will give readers a real feel for local events and places, as well as practical information to make their experience in Door County the best it can be. This is the first in a series of articles that I plan to submit for travelers to Sister Bay, or those who would like to visit vicariously.
Someplace You Have to Experience in Sister Bay: or, Where Your Treasure is, There Your Heart Will Be Also ...
Julie’s Upscale Resale
This week I would like to take you to a place in Sister Bay that is probably one of the most popular with locals and tourists alike, Julie’s Upscale Resale. I can’t remember how I discovered Julie’s. I’m pretty sure that my twelve year old, American Picker-loving son, found it first. I do know that since I discovered Julie’s I sometimes stop in more than once a day.
Everyone finds something to love at Julie's.
It’s not just the fact that the merchandise is often completely different between morning and afternoon. There seems to be a constant flow of consigners bringing things in, and Julie seems expert at pricing so that it’s hard to say no to a purchase. It’s also the X factor, the people ... and maybe something bigger. As soon as you enter Julie’s you get the feeling that you’re out shopping with your pals. There‘s always a happy banter going on between Julie, Heidi and other staff and customers.
I asked Julie some questions, and she took the time to write so beautifully. I think that what she says explains the X factor that makes Julie’s a place that you’ll want to frequent. Whether you are seeking earthly or other treasures, you may find it here.
Here’s what Julie had to say:
"When we began we had a handful of consigners, and I could keep all my accounts in a pencil case. This is funny to me, as now, 6 years later, we have over 800 consigners and it takes a suitcase to carry my accounts! Am I surprised by the success … yes … because it is above and beyond what I could ask or think, and no because it is such a God business that of course it is so wonderfully blessed!
I do not claim to be an expert in any area. This is just a love that I have always had, and getting to do it everyday is so wonderful. I love all the people I meet. I’ve made so many friends. I love that we get all walks of life in this shop. Everybody loves a treasure! I would want people to know that we are grateful every day for the wonderful people that make us successful, our consigners that bring us such wonderful treasures to sell and our customers that come to buy them. I would also want them to know that I do this for fun and for giving back to the community that has given my family so much. I enjoy seeing my friends and neighbors on a regular basis and getting to reach out and help sometimes.
On that note, we do donate items if they are not picked up at their 60-day floor limit. We donate to Feed My People, a food bank that has operated in the Door County area for as many years as I can remember. They run a thrift store that directly funds the food pantry, and they are a blessing to many.
Lots of great stuff to be found at Julie's!
Upcoming events: We are hosting the third visit of our friend Terri, who is a gold buyer. She will buy gold on the spot and has testing abilities. The last two times that she came we had overwhelming turnouts, and people made tremendous amounts of money on old jewelry. This time she is also buying sterling silver and silverware! We are excited. She will be here June 17 and 18. Anyone is welcome to come in and get their jewelry appraised and then decide if they want to sell it. It is all done privately in our back room. We will hold other events as opportunities arise. We have held classes in mosaics, sewing and mitten making. They have been times of fun and friendship. We like to make new friends and connect people with opportunities in a fun casual setting where we can all laugh and learn.
A final aspect of our business is that we are the ultimate in recycling! So being a “green” business we also offer the Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day full line of phosphate-free, green, plant-based, cleaning products that are good for cleaning, easy on your hands and smell delightful! We offer 10% off Mrs. Meyer’s every day. It is an outstanding product that is made right here in the Midwest. We offer the discount to encourage people to be good to our lake! Phosphates are what grow all the foreign weeds.
Thank you for your interest in Julie’s Upscale Resale. A lot of people follow us on Facebook at Julie’s Upscale Resale of Door County. We post pictures of our latest drop offs on a regular basis and lots of people enjoy window-shopping there."
-Julie
I think that the popularity of Julie’s Upscale Resale Shop is a sign of the times. In light of our current earth consciousness, global awareness, and economic state, resale makes sense. Resale is a great way for consumers to buck the planned obsolescence mentality. Reusing items saves the shopper money, helps the environment, and creates a situation where we are more likely to be creative and unique. We aren’t all going to the same popularly marketed shops and boutiques for mass-marketed retail items. We are less likely to be influenced by the advertising and marketing in our choices for dress, decoration, even the intended use of an item.
Julie's carries clothing too.
One of my personal favorites at Julie’s is the geranium-scented Meyers dish soap. It’s wonderful. It smells exactly like rose-scented geraniums and makes the whole kitchen smell fresh. So, earthly or other, you’re pretty likely to find a treasure at Julie’s.
Julie’s is tucked directly behind Sister Bay Bowl, which is right on Highway 42. The address is 2350 Maple Drive, Sister Bay, Wisconsin 54234. The hours are Monday through Saturday 10:00-4:00. The phone number is 920-421-0770. They do take credit cards. Visit Julie's Facebook Page.
