Local Artist Tim Kornowski Unveils a Masterpiece of a Mural

Artist Tim Kornowski of Sturgeon Bay got an early start with his craft. He began at age 5 or 6 with crayons and pencil. By age 7, he was a producing painter. A Green Bay native, Kornowski wasted no time in jump-starting his art career. During his pre-teen years he charged other kids $2.50 to do a pencil drawing of a sports figure based on a trading card. Business was brisk.
By the age of 12, Tim was enrolled at the Gordon School of Art and studied with John Gordon. He worked mostly in oils, learning by imitation. Projects included copying works of the Old Masters, such as Velazquez, Rembrandt, and Michelangelo. At first this may seem a curious exercise, but learning by doing is the name of the game. In fact, musicians learn much the same way ... by imitating what they hear the pros performing. In the olden days, apprentices often learned the craft this exact same way. The creative juices flowed, and "The Old Boots" painting seen here was a Kornowski original at age 14. This intense artistic training was completed as an after school activity, and five years later, Tim had completed the entire program. One of his final projects was a self-portrait.
Tim Kornowski paints "en plein air" in downtown Sturgeon Bay.
After high school, during which Tim was on and off with his art, he worked at various jobs until he found his present trade as a coffeemaker at Door County Coffee & Tea in Carlsville. Painting is his passion, though, and he's producing new works as time and days off permit. You'll often see Tim painting outdoors, usually in the Sturgeon Bay area. His strengths and particular interests are portraiture, still life, and scenery.
"The Old Boots" was painted at age 14.
"Natural talent gets you started", Tim explains, "but it's the hard work of planning and thinking before the execution that counts most. We paint with our brains, not our hands." Such focus has resulted in portraiture, outdoor scenes, murals, and other subjects for his clients. He's especially proud of a religious scene he painted on canvas for St. Peter & Paul Parish in Green Bay.
Annabelle
A recent portrait of a young girl seated on her horse brought accolades for Tim's work. "You captured her (Annabelle's) personality and her spirit, without having even met her. It was everything I dreamt of and more, everything I wanted in our painting, which is now a family heirloom to be enjoyed by our children, and their children...", according to the client.
Kornowski Originals was started in 2008 as Tim launched his business, specializing in commissioned work for private individuals. His wife Jennifer helps with the business, which is conducted primarily online, while Tim's studio is in his home. Two very young daughters keep him busy as well!
Artist house party.
A recent house party at a local residence found Tim unveiling his latest and probably largest, at least as for size, commission. This project required some research, that is, reading the children's fantasy novel "Redwall", by the late Brian Jacques of England. The video below depicts how this fun mural came to be, step by step. The painting, entitled "Cavern Hole", executed in latex paint, occupies the entire wall of the home's family room. Punchy colors and a bit of whimsy bring the portrayal of Jacques' memorable characters, all animals, to life. If you have read any of the numerous novels in the Redwall series, you may know some of these wonderful characters. In fact, there's a Marlfox lurking in the shadows, and that's a bit of a problem of the residents of Redwall Abbey. But in the end good prevails over evil and all is well.
