A program entitled “Life at Haiti’s Largest Orphanage” will be presented on Saturday, October 29 from 3:30 - 4:45 pm in Jameson Hall, adjoining Holy Nativity Church on County V in Jacksonport. The talk, which will include a multimedia presentation, is part of the Fall Program Series sponsored by Christ the King/Holy Nativity Episcopal Church of Sturgeon Bay and Jacksonport.

Cynthia A. DeSoi, MD will take you behind the scenes at Hope Village, an amazing place where hope reigns supreme for some of Haiti’s children and young adults. The orphanage was started with just a few street kids in 1998 by Fr. Marc Boisvert, who has directed the facility ever since. Cynthia has made over 40 trips to the orphanage since 1999 and has been Medical Director since 2003, while holding down a large nephrology and internal medicine practice in Lewiston, Maine.

A multimedia presentation will reveal what it’s like to be one of the lucky ones ... these kids get food, shelter, education, recreation, health care, spiritual care, and a staff family that is totally dedicated to making a difference for the children and their future. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers about Haiti as an environment for children, the kids at the orphanage, treating the sick and injured, etc.

The group will also explore the possibility of a mission trip of Door County folks to the orphanage. Rotary Clubs, church groups, and medical/dental volunteers are among the many frequent visitors who spend time working on projects on site.

Home to almost 800 orphans, the facility, known as Project Espwa - Hope Village, has grown to a large campus of over 100 acres with hundreds of employees. It includes dormitories, kitchens, multi-purpose buildings, a school, guest house, and a medical clinic, just to name a few. It is situated in southern Haiti, near Les Cayes.

The current clinic was formerly a chicken coop.
The current medical clinic, pictured here, is much too small to serve the needs of the orphanage, and a new building is currently under construction and slated to open next summer. Volunteers from many organizations plus a bunch of hard-working older boys at the facility have worked for several months to build the structure. The cost of the building has been covered by myriad individuals and organizations across the United States. A fundraiser with a very generous matching program by a corporate donor is currently underway to assure that medical equipment and supplies are in place by next summer. Pharmaceutical companies continue to be very generous with donations of basic drugs, largely unavailable to the poor in the country of Haiti.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Jameson Hall is a newly-constructed facility opened this year for community fellowship and program functions. Holy Nativity Church is a historical landmark recognized by the Wisconsin Historical Society and dates back to 1885. Father Joseph Jameson, in whose memory the new structure is named, served as Vicar from 1889-1924.
