It’s easy to get to the newly-chartered Cowboy Church of Northern Door. Find Uncle Tom’s and drive north on Timberline Road to 12376 Timberline Road, where you will see a sign welcoming all to the non-denominational, 'No Barrier' Cowboy Church.

The Cowboy Church of America has a rich tradition of meeting the spiritual needs of cowboys and rodeo riders and people traveling who can’t always find their church.

But it’s not just for those visiting Door County. This reporter met many friends at the horse-barn, there for the music and fellowship.

That’s right. The Cowboy Church of Northern Door is held in a horse-barn. But, unlike any other horse-barn up here, Bob Tidball’s horse stable has rubber mats on the floor and airy box stalls for his beautiful horses, who enjoyed the service while out in their pasture. Those horses provided the visual background for the traditional bluegrass music provided by the Fairland Bluegrass Band out of Sturgeon Bay, and for the impassioned sermon by Pastor Lloyd Michalsen, founder and driving force of the Cowboy Church of Northern Door.

Folding chairs filled the walkway of the barn and outside, until there was standing room only. The Cowboy Church is growing rapidly and may soon outgrow the generous donation of space by Tidball. Luckily for all those present, the weather was comfortable with a gentle breeze cooling everyone off.

At the entrance, Nancy, Lloyd’s wife, handed out programs, showed people the box of cowboy hats that were there for people to borrow for the duration, and answered questions. There was a jar on the table for free will donations which pay for the free New Testaments handed out freely to all who wanted one. Families, couples, friends all felt the fellowship created by the sharing of music and the uplifting message of the day.

The hour-long service or program included group singing, many musical offerings by the Fairland Bluegrass Band and Floyd’s ‘house band’ and then a short sermon by Pastor Lloyd, an experienced and seasoned storyteller and musician in his own right.

Lloyd Michalsen and his wife Nancy established and hosted ‘Door Jam’ in Sister Bay for two years. After losing that space, Lloyd answered the call for a summer ministry, and the Cowboy Church began. While applying for a permit to conduct gatherings in Liberty Grove, Bob Tidball overheard Lloyd’s inquiries and later offered his barn to the Cowboy Church of Northern Door.

Lloyd was familiar with Cowboy Church from his travels to Tennessee and the surrounding states. Most Cowboy Churches are in Texas, Montana and other western states. There are 200 such churches in the
