Installation of officers for the newly formed Rotary Club of Door County North. |
Door County’s third Rotary
Club was officially chartered on June 16, and the inauguration and installation
of officers took place at an elegant dinner party at the Alpine Resort in Egg
Harbor on June 27. The Rotary Club of Door County North celebrated its
establishment by 26 charter members, who meet weekly at the Cornerstone Pub in
downtown Baileys Harbor.
The new club was sponsored
by the Sturgeon Bay Rotary Club, which took a leadership role in getting the
Baileys Harbor club organized. Paul Kok, President of the Sturgeon Bay club and
Roger Utnehmer, Rotary District 6220 Assistant Governor, were instrumental in
putting together this group of mostly northern Door folks who will be committed
to Rotary’s ideals and core values, which emphasize “service above self”. The
new club also received support from President Greg Dietz of the Sturgeon Bay
Breakfast Club and Steve Allen, President of the Kewaunee Rotary Club. Other
Rotary Clubs from the region sent representatives to this event.
The
charter members of this new club are: Wayne Ault, Lisa Bieri,
Garey Bies, Challoner Brown, BJ Cassidy, Dave Eliot, Garrett Cohn, Cynthia
Crock, Larry Crock, Nancy Fisher, Carl Giessel, Carrie Graybill, Scott Graybill,
Stephen Kastner, Matt Koehler, Steve Leonard, Matt Luders, Bob Maves, Helen
Mueller, Jason Polecheck, Paul Salm, Marc Savard, Mike Serpe, Ed Stone, Roger
Utnehmer, and Stan Whiteman. A diverse group of folks, the new club includes
all age groups of adults, including one member who is 94 years old.
Paul Salm of Sister Bay was named President of the new club, which
meets every Wednesday at 7:30 am for a short meeting. This service group enjoys
a delicious breakfast buffet while listening to interesting speakers on a
variety of timely topics. Club officers are Nancy Fisher, Matt Koehler, Matt
Luders, Roger Utnehmer, and Stan Whiteman.

Rotary International Vice President Tom Thorfinnson advises the group to have fun while providing service above self. |
Presiding at the ceremony was Steven Selvick, District Governor of
Rotary District 6220, which comprises the clubs in northeastern Wisconsin and
Upper Michigan. Steve is a member of the Sturgeon Bay Breakfast Club. The
keynote speaker of the evening was Tom Thorfinnson, Vice President of Rotary
International and director of the Rotary zone in which the new club is located.
Tom spoke to the group of the wonderful work Rotarians perform all over the
world and the commitment of its members. “But the most important element for
club survival is fun”, he stressed. “Hard work and money are surely important,
but clubs that have fun together and get their members passionately involved in
accomplishing goals are the ones that grow”. Selvick closed the party by
thanking all for “committing your time to help those less fortunate than us to
make our community and the world a better place.”
Committed to serving the local community and the world with
service projects, Rotary members are found almost all over the world and number
over 1,200,000 men and women. Key initiatives include erasing polio worldwide
through the Rotary Foundation (with a matching grant from the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation), providing clean water and sanitation in towns and villages
worldwide, and hundreds of charitable projects tasked with making the world a
better place to live and promoting world peace through friendships.
The Rotary Club of Door County North welcomes
new members, who may attend as guests without the need for a reservation.
Visiting Rotarians who are in our area as tourists or seasonal residents are
encouraged to attend meetings for makeup credit for their home club. For more
