Northern Door Rotary Club Being Established
By Steve Allen
Apr 12, 2011 - 8:55:00 AM
A new Rotary Club is in the process of being organized in Door
County. It will be called Northern Door Rotary Club and will draw its
membership primarily from individuals working or residing in
that area, although members can hail from anywhere, as long as they find
it convenient to attend meetings on a regular basis. The meeting place
is the Cornerstone Pub in Baileys Harbor, and the weekly breakfast
meeting takes place every Wednesday from 7:30 - 8:45 am. The agenda will
almost always include a breakfast buffet priced at $10, a short Rotary
business meeting, and a guest speaker. Speakers will include a variety
of people from various walks of life who will present a diversity of
topics.
What is Rotary? Rotary International is the world's first service club organization,
with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary
club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and
internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide
education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under
the motto Service Above Self.
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service
as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and
foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions; the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the
dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve
society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding,
goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and
professional persons united in the ideal of service.
Door County has had two Rotary clubs for many years, both being in Sturgeon Bay. The Sturgeon Bay Rotary Club meets Thursdays for lunch, and the Sturgeon Bay Breakfast Rotary Club meets Tuesdays for breakfast. There has been thought given to the idea of establishing this third club in the northern portion of the county for quite some time. It is now happening!
The second organizational meeting took place on Wednesday, April 6 and included both commiitted new members and people having a look at what it is all about to see if it fits for them. The speaker upon this occasion was one of the new members of the group, Stephen Kastner.
Stephen Kastner of DesignWise Studios speaks to the new Rotary group on Social Marketing
Kastner develops Internet marketing campaigns, learning resources and on-line news and community information portal Web sites. He is the owner of DesignWise Studios in Fish Creek. DesignWise Studios is a creative media developer employing digital
photography, videography, graphic design and working knowledge of
social media to create truly integrated marketing solutions.
In his talk to the fledgling Rotary group, Kastner emphasized how rapidly the social media opportunities available to businesses are growing and changing. "It seems like every week there is an improvement in technology or product enhancement in one of the major platforms, which include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others", Kastner explained. Door County businesses should strongly consider hopping on board and doing everything
"Social Media is not slowing down"
they can to allow their business message to "go viral", he advised. Facebook in particular is proliferating in Door County among businesses setting up "Fan Pages", and more and more individuals of all ages in the county are joining Facebook as members, which is free. Once thought to be a playground for the younger set and computer nerds, Facebook has emerged as a powerful force in mainstream marketing, both locally and internationally.
Kastner is Facebook administrator for over 100 Door County businesses, and the list keeps growing. It doesn't necessarily replace the need for a great business website, Kastner continued, but it gets the business message or offer out there in an exponential way, and business leaders can end up driving more traffic to their native websites.
"Social media is not slowing down", Kastner emphasized. It's changing rapidly and will pass by those businesses not paying enough attention to it. There are all sorts of new ways to reach people, be it QR (short for Quick Response) Codes on printed materials or YouTube videos with the latest offerings in your store, resort, or whatever it might be. Many local Door County success stories using these innovative technqiues were shared. "Door County businesses really should work in a collaborative rather than a competitive way when it comes to social media ... this will greatly enhance the entire Door County presence on the world wide web", Kastner stated in his closing remarks.

Kastner offers a free e-book entitled "6 Steps to a Social Business ... the never-ending story", which is being constantly revised and therefore is available only as a PDF which can be downloaded from his website. "If I printed this book, it would be obsolete by the time it was available on the street," added Kastner. It's now in its seventeenth revision since last fall.

The Northern Door Rotary Club will apply for a charter with Rotary International once it has 25 committed members. It is very close to that number already. Paul Salm of the Cornerstone Pub has been selected as Club President and will serve until June, 2012, and Nancy Fisher of the Village of Egg Harbor has been chosen as President-Elect and will take office in July, 2012. Other officers will be appointed soon.
If you are a person who is interested in finding out more about this tremendous opportunity to give back to the local community, help other people throughout the world, make new friendships, and have a lot of fun, please plan to attend one or more of the future Northern Door County Rotary Club meetings ... soon if you can. There's no obligation to join, but you will meet some great people!
