Planning Your Winter Visit to Door County

The Eagle Bluff Room at Door County Lighthouse Inn.
Door County Lighthouse Inn.
Quiet. That's what you'll find here on the Door Peninsula during the winter months ... the "off-season". Unlike the busy summer and fall months, you won't find crowds or waiting lines at the eateries. In fact, after the sun sets, you will probably notice that the sidewalks are rolled up and vehicles disappear from village streets and even highways. It's charming.
You're up for a getaway, with no kids or mother-in-laws. It's just you and quite possibly your significant other. Where to stay? Where to eat? What to do that is fun and might result in a special purchase by which to remember the time you had here? Let's get started.
We'll have you stay at the Door County Lighthouse Inn B&B in downtown Egg Harbor. Situated close to the Visitors Center and the Peg Egan Performing Arts Center (summer concerts only), you'll enjoy a nice wintery view of the village from every window in any of the wonderfully appointed rooms in this small inn. Owners Claire and Frank Murphy built this establishment a few years back upon their retirement from hectic jobs in the Chicago area. You'll immediately notice that everything about this cozy B&B says "Lighthouses". Inside and out, a Lighthouse motif is everywhere.
Your stay at the Door County Lighthouse Inn B&B is available as part of a package called "Sleigh Bells and Romance", running from late November through March. You'll have your elegant and comfy room (some with hot tub) and a full breakfast and great conversation with the hosts and

other guests. On Saturday, you'll join the Door County Trolley tour for a winter ride to an award-winning Door County winery. Yes, there will be a wine-tasting! Then you and your special person will have a cozy sleigh ride (real sleigh and real horse). Next comes lunch at the famous White Gull Inn in Fish Creek. Last, your package includes a delightful dinner at the English Inn. You'll also get a $25 Door County Gift Certificate to use at many establishments. Call for pricing.
Have a look around Egg Harbor. Read our feature articles on what to do in this wonderful little village. Just search our archives using the box at the top of this page. Don't miss the dinosaur egg fossil at the Dovetail Gallery. It's a must-see rare item!
Frykman Gallery.
Take a jaunt to Sister Bay! Here are some highlights which are all well worth your time. If you didn't find a take-home gift for yourselves in Egg Harbor, you might find it here! You'll want to stop at
Sister Bay Trading Company.
Bay Shore Outdoor Store.
Pipka's and enjoy the very unique art pieces this marvelous lady creates. A Christmas theme pervades this store, and Pipka is always eager to show you her latest creations!
The Frykman Gallery is a fascinating place, especially if you love fine art and photography. You may remember this building as the former gallery of Jack Anderson. Jack and Sue have retired but are still very active in the community. Jack's fabulous paintings are found in various galleries throughout the county. Not far away is Sister Bay Trading Company and Bay Shore Outdoor Store. The former is a haven of home furnishings and decorating ideas, while the latter is outdoor sports oriented. Both make for interesting browsing and perhaps a purchase!
Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant.
In downtown Sister Bay, you'll of course stop at the "goats-on-the-roof" place, Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant. Have a treat or a meal and be sure to peek in the gift shop, where unique gifts, many made in Sweden, beckon you. Fine quality here, yes there is. You won't see the goats on the roof this time, it's winter and it's too slippery up there for them! Out on Route 57, on the way out of town towards Baileys Harbor, you'll want to stop at Door County Bakery for a sweet treat or a loaf of homemade bread. Awesome!
Door County Bakery.
This is just a start. Keep your eyes open and you may find other places that stay open in the winter. You're sure to find the welcome mat rolled out for you, as store traffic is likely to be limited. Sometimes that's nice, and when the sidewalks are rolled up and everyone is tucked into their warm beds, you'll enjoy that warm feeling of ambiance that being in Door County provides. It is a spell? Who knows, but it sure is magic.
