Young talent shines at Songfest

Steel Bridge Songfest 2011
Steel Bridge Songfest in Sturgeon Bay brings together musicians of all ages, and one of the coolest aspects of the week-long experience is the opportunity for mentoring the new faces on the music scene. Thus was the case during the 2011 event, where the three youngest participants, two guys and a gal, spent a lot of time with their older musical peers and had a blast learning, playing music, and just plain having fun.

Tarl Knight of Ashwaubenon, near Green Bay, spent songwriting time with older and more seasoned musicians. Knight, who has been composing and performing since age seven, found the experience to be "a great opportunity to write songs with some of the world's most accomplished people".

Knight also liked the emphasis on solo gigs in this year's festival, as well as ensemble performances, such as those heard during the wonderful evening at the Third Avenue Playhouse in downtown Sturgeon Bay. Tarl brilliantly executed some of his own compositions, such as "Planet Mars", during which he played the keyboard, and "Edge of the Sky", led by his soulful harmonica.

Tarl, still in high school, is both composer and performer, which should serve him well in his musical career. He started on the piano at age seven but also picked up ukelele. Over the years, he added drums, bass, harmonica, trumpet, and guitar. He's played locally at many venues, including Manitowoc's Acoustic Fest and Kewaunee's Star Search at the County Fair. As a composer, he has written over 200 songs.

Anya Kopischke
Anya Kopischke of Fish Creek was perhaps the youngest female musician at the festival. "The most exciting thing for me was making my first appearance at the TAP and recording my original compositions at the Holiday Music Motel's studio", she stated excitedly. "It's great to work with talented and supportive people". Anya also performs and competes locally. She's a student at Gibraltar High in Fish Creek. Her performances were spunky and full of youthful vigor. Watch her closely as she will surely make Door County proud!

Liam Hall
The youngest shining star was Liam Hall. He's the son of James Hall, a Songfest participant for several years. James was seen and heard frequently during the festival with his superb guitar sound and rousing vocals. The family hails from Atlanta, and this was fourteen-year-old Liam's second year here. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and Liam played confidently at the TAP evening, backed up by his elder Songfest greats. The finale song, "I Am The People" had the almost full house totally enchanted in a spectacular moment of musical bliss. Liam has seven musical compositions under his belt and was "thrilled to be a part of this big family of musicians".

Here's hoping that Steel Bridge Songfest continues to be a not only a laboratory for musical creation but a landmark for youth music education as well.
