Egg Harbor Frosty Fest Kicks off 2011
By Steve Allen

Door County will soon have a brand new festival to add to the ever-growing roster of fun things to do on the Peninsula. Granted, there are not many festivals and the like during the winter months, but over the past decades the list has grown.
Egg Harbor's new Frosty Fest is the latest foray into the concept of a winter gathering in this magical place. It's actually not a brand new offering for this particular day in this particular village. For more than 30 years, Egg Harbor has hosted a New Years Parade.
According
to the locals, it all started back in 1977.
The bartender that day at the Anchor Inn (now Casey’s) was Mark Feldt. Darrel
Lautenbach and his brother-in-law John stopped and asked Mark if he had
seen the parade go by. “What parade”, he inquired, knowing of no such
event being scheduled. "We were the parade. We just rode our horses
through the village and had a New Year’s Day parade. It's going to get
bigger and better every year,” Darrel explained. Looking out the window,
across the street, Mark saw two horses decorated in red, white, and
blue streamers on their heads, manes, and tails. Darrel continued to
inform everyone in the bar that day that this parade was going to get
bigger and better every year! And apparently it did. It’s now an
officially listed event of the Egg Harbor Business Association, although
it really doesn’t need any sponsorship other than its happy
participants. No matter what the weather, the Egg Harbor New Years Parade happens.
But Frosty Fest is much more than a parade. The Y is sponsoring an "Icy Fun Run", although one would hope the running itself isn't on ice. This event takes place right after the parade ends, about 1:30 pm. In addition, there will be snow sculptures and refreshments. Many local establishments will be open for this special day.
All in all, Frost Fest is sure to ring in the new year with glee.
Hint: The Annual Jacksonport Polar Bear Club Meeting takes place just prior to the Egg Harbor event. The plunge happens at noon sharp, and if you don't dawdle in Jacksonport, you can make it to Egg Harbor Frosty Fest! Read about the Polar Plunge here:
