Downtown Egg Harbor
Downtown Egg Harbor
Years ago Egg Harbor was more of a town to drive through than the destination it is today. The Village of Egg Harbor is home to some very unique establishments that cater largely to the tourist but are also favorites among the locals. For a good overview of what's available, check out the Egg Harbor Business Association's Visitor Center. For some of our personal favorites gleaned from years of wanderings, read on!

As you approach Egg Harbor on Route 42, you'll cross County G. If you turn left, you'll be on your way to the Alpine Resort, where you can play 36 holes on one of Door County's favorite courses. The Alpine Golf Course offers 36 holes, a practice range, practice putting green, and a hole rated as "most scenic in Wisconsin".

Decorators Gallery
Decorators Gallery, Egg Harbor
If you stay on Route 42, you'll see Sunnypoint Gardens on your left, just off Sunnypoint Road. This is a convenient nursery with a large selection. Once you get into the village, you'll notice a beautiful stone church, St. John the Baptist. At times it is open for viewing. Coming up on your right will be a very worthwhile stop at the Decorator's Gallery. If you're a fan of Fish Creek artist Charles ("Chick") Peterson, you'll be delighted to find a good number of originals for sale at this fine gallery. You may see some of the famous nautical works that many of us would love to hang on our walls. And yes, you can find some reasonably priced prints here as well, including the recent "Memories" series.

Just across the street on the same side of Highway 42 is perhaps the finest grocery store north of Sturgeon Bay. The Main Street Market is a bright and cheerful place whose local "Mom and Pop" owners are purveyors of all things culinary as well as the largest selection of wine we've seen anywhere. A deli and bakery round out the offerings at this friendly establishment, where the baggers insist on carrying your purchases out to your vehicle. What luxury! Just like old times (thinking back a few decades!)

It won't be long before you notice Harborview Park downtown on your left, home of the annual Pumpkin Patch Festival every autumn. The park overlooks a quaint little harbor with boat slips and locker room facilities for overnight marina guests.

If you made it to Pumpkin Patch Festival this year, you might have seen some of the wonderful faces shown here. We had a great weekend for weather! As usual, everything looked quite festive around town. This event has just grown and grown over the past several years! One tip on avoiding frustrating traffic and/or parking problems ... park at the Landmark Resort and take the free trolley into town. It runs back and forth all day Saturday. If you miss the last trip up the hill, like we did, then you get a good workout hiking back to your car.

The Bridge
The Bridge Internet Cafe and Book Shop
Going up the hill to the north out of the village, still on Route 42, you'll see a little wooden bridge. There is a walkway from the road to an attractive building called "The Bridge", a very special place to visit and relax. A combination bookstore, coffee shop, internet cafe, and gathering place for poetry readings, speaker presentations, or music sharing, you'll enjoy the great view of Green Bay from either level of the building. Art work by local artists adorns the walls and is for sale. Best of all, Donna Lash and her staff make you feel welcome and can answer your Door County questions with great enthusiasm, while preparing your Cappuccino and made-to-order sandwich.

At The Bridge, board games are available if you feel like spending some quality time with a partner. The Bridge is now a wireless hotspot, so bring in your laptop if you wish to hop onto the Internet. If you don't have your laptop along, you can use the PC in the cafe area for a small fee!
