The Peg Egan Performing Arts Center is thrilled to announce
a crowd-pleasing line-up of nationally acclaimed artists for its 2012 Summer

Porter, Women with Spirit- featuring Julie Gold (Grammy winner of the song
“From A Distance, along with national touring aritsts, Karen Savoca, Dorothy
Scott & Sue Demel, also this summer you will enjoy the music of Cavern Beat, Dane Hicks and the Hot

Steve & Janice Wood of Wood Orchard near Egg Harbor.
Steve Wood’s parents left the heat and humidity of St. Louis to come to
Door County in 1955. Thus the Wood Orchard was born, and today it encompasses 200
acres of apple and cherry trees, plus crops such as strawberries, raspberries
and asparagus that supply the landmark Wood Orchard Market north of Egg Harbor.
Guests share stories at the Door County Lighthouse Inn.
Claire
and Frank Murphy of Egg Harbor are living their dream of successfully
owning and operating a themed bed & breakfast establishment in Door
County. In fact, their camaraderie as business partners works quite well
as they share the duties required to provide excellent hospitality for
their many guests.
Mr. & Mrs. Murphy work from opposite desks in their modest living
quarters in the inn, right in downtown Egg Harbor. When guests are
expected or are on property, they scurry about preparing rooms and
meals, and their gathering/breakfast room is an inviting place to meet
and chat with guests, complete with fireplace for the cozy winter
months.
Many
business owners strive to find dedicated employees, especially in areas
like Door County where seasonality can be a struggle at times. This past
Thursday, Joe Smith, General Manager for Door County's Only
Microbrewery in Egg Harbor, received a phone call while away from the
pub.
Unlike other calls
from the restaurant that might inquire about where-to-find-this and
how-to-treat-that, this call was quite unique. It was Amanda Stout,
Assistant Manager and expectant mother, calling from work, simply
letting him know that "it was time" and that he should plan to come in.
As Smith recalls, the time of the call on his cell phone was 8:39 p.m.
Egg Harbor Marina is Wisconsin’s newest Clean Marina
recognized by the Wisconsin Marina Association.
The newly renovated $6 million municipal harbor of refuge
was honored on December 6th for their commitment to protecting water
quality by adopting best management practices for their facility (BMPs). The
marina includes a state-of-the-art green infrastructure that manages stormwater
and an 800 ft. breakwater that offers scenic views of the lake.
“This award means the Egg Harbor Marina is using good
management practices, sustaining our livelihood, and preserving the waters for
future generations,” said Nicole Krauel, the village’s assistant harbor master.
In only 18 months, Wisconsin has recognized 17 other
marinas with the Clean Marina certification.

Quiet.
That's what you'll find here on the Door Peninsula during the winter
months ... the "off-season". Unlike the busy summer and fall months, you
won't find crowds or waiting lines at the eateries. In fact, after the
sun sets, you will probably notice that the sidewalks are rolled up and vehicles disappear from village streets and even highways. It's charming.
You're up for a getaway, with no kids or mother-in-laws. It's just you
and quite possibly your significant other. Where to stay? Where to eat?
What to do that is fun and might result in a special purchase by which
to remember the time you had here? Let's get started.
Door
County enters its quiet period by November, but that means there's some
very happy and satisfying times just waiting for you during your
upcoming get-a-way weekend on the Peninsula. Just think, no traffic, no
waiting anywhere, relaxed local folks to chat with, and most of all,
quiet and relaxing ambiance.
But you need to make a plan so that you don't waste your valuable time
driving to places that are already closed for the winter.
Phil Faustini with a Whitefish Bay Road customer's hostas.
It
took many years of experimenting with plants and fertilizer ingredients
on a quiet farm near the Village of Egg Harbor before Stephen Follett
smiled at his green and abundant garden and whispered, "I've got it".
This was well before 1952, when he finally began production and local
sales of his new formula, Watch Us Grow®, as much a secret as the famed
Coca-Cola recipe.
The liquid plant food is made completely from naturally-occurring
compounds, trace elements, and organic and inorganic materials. But it's
still a trade secret as to the exact recipe for this amazing stuff,
which stays in solution indefinitely and is known for its dramatic
difference in producing big and healthy vegetation.
Egg Harbor's Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival is
one of the best events in Door County for kids. It's held in early October in downtown Egg Harbor. Going strong now for
about two decades, Pumpkin Patch seems to have become synonymous with
colorful fall fun on the Peninsula. People come from all over the
Midwest and beyond, year after year, to soak in the feeling this busy
event imbues. They eat, play, relax, and depart with cheer. Children are
major participants in this festival.
Kids truly
love Pumpkin Patch Festival, plain and simple. Why? Perhaps for them
it's sort of a two-day mini version of Disney World or Great America.
There is no Mickey Mouse or Hurricane Harbor Water Park to be found, but
kids will have plenty to keep them enthused all weekend long. It's
about lots of cool things going on, lots of delicious food, lots of
sights to see, lots of rides, and lots of just plain fun to be had!
Chris Irwin and Friends return to the Woodwalk Concert series this Friday, August 26th. Irwin
describes his music as country/bluegrass and indie, as he brings his
original tunes and favorite folk style tunes to the his show.
Known
for his years as an actor and singer at American Folklore Theater
presentations and for concerts with Lewis and Burroughs, he brings his
music home to Door County every summer.
A rare opportunity to view historic 19th century industrial farm complex
On Saturday, August 27 the Egg Harbor Historical Society will host a
picnic on the grounds of the historic Horseshoe Bay Barns to celebrate
Egg Harbor's 150th anniversary. All those interested in Door County's
history and preserving our stories for future generations are invited to
attend.
Former employees and friends of Horseshoe Bay Farms, one of the county's
most picturesque buildings, will conduct tours of the 10 building
complex.
Artist
"Skye" silkscreens John Dylan's lyrics into huge fabric panels in an
art installation she is calling "Shakespeare's in the Alley". This body
of work will frame the stage at the Woodwalk Concert: "Buckets Of Rain:
The Songs of Bob Dylan", Sept 1-3 and and 8-9 at 7:00 pm. You will also
be able to visit this display during normal Woodwalk Gallery hours for
that week.
Skye describes her artistic vision. "I became enamored with Bob Dylan, his life, writing and music, a few
springs ago, after watching the Martin Scorcese film about him, No
Direction Home."
Friday August 12th Robin Bienemann CD Release Concert
Robin
Bienemann brings his wickedly funny original songs to the Woodwalk
stage. His new CD , "Songs About Work", is brilliantly funny,
intellectual, and raw crazy outrageous. This hilarious and touching new
batch of songs is inspired by stories of people working for a living.
Work is a common thread of experience that ties us all together. We might like, or not like it, but we all do it.
Krista Detor is a performer out of Bloomington, Indiana, whose album "Mudshow" was
released in 2006 to international critical acclaim, garnering an average
of 4+ star reviews, and reaching the #1 spot on the Euro-Americana Chart.
Signed in Europe with Corazong Records, Detor's follow-up album, "Cover
Their Eyes", made similar waves in the European musical world.
Detor brought
audiences to their feet last year at Woodwalk combining her amazing songwriting,
inspired piano work and soulful, sultry voice with her dry sense of humor.
July 21 sees a special Thursday night event
called Science and Sustainability!
Dr. Roger Kuhns is a geologist and
environmental scientist with over 30 years experience. He will give entertaining short talks with
amultimedia show on the topic of
how to introduce sustainable practices into everyday life.
Kuhns says the
application of sustainable practices requires experienced knowledge and
practical application of the triple bottom line: Environment, Economy,
Community.
Eli Mattson got his start singing in coffee shops, bars and
theaters in Door County when he was 18. In 2008, the whole country noticed his
passionate baritone vocals and stunning piano playing and voted Mattson second
place winner on the 2008's Americas Got Talent TV show.
Since then he has traversed the country performing all kinds of venues
including casinos and hotels in Vegas and Los Angeles. He enjoyed playing at Carnegie Hall
last fall. Mattson loves performing and
feels most alive on stage and likes playing lots of different scenarios. After
all these years he has finally found the right band and written the right songs
and will be recording this summer.
Jeanne Kuhns weaves mystical lyrics and intriguing musical
patterns into a fusion of bluesy/jazzwrapped in her brand of progressive folk.
"She is sonically and stylistically something of a mix of
Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell and an acoustically inclined Bonnie Raitt," says Crow
and Wolf Music. Coming together two years ago with Kuhns, and very excited to participate in a singer/songwriter
band, George Sawyn and Patrick Palmer complete the trio Lost Mothra! The
combination of excellent musicianship, unforgettable vocals performing
primarily original music, add ina few unexpected eclectic covers and Kuhns' ability to emotionally
connect with audiences and you have the Lost Mothra experience!
Kuhns was voted "Best Female Musician" from Door County Magazine readers in
2008. She conceived of and books the Woodwalk Concert Series. Sawyn, a veteran
of the Chicago music scene for thirty years, brings his exceptional and
versatile abilities on the acoustic and electric guitar, bringing strong jazz
and stunning classical style influences to the musical arrangements. Patrick
Palmer plays upright and electric bass and guides the group rhythmically with
his imaginative bass lines.
BeauSoleil with Michael Doucet, a six-piece Cajun Band of great repute,
absolutely captured its audience at the Peg Egan Performing Arts Center
in Egg Harbor. Sunday evening, June 26, was the summer season opener at
the gorgeous outdoor venue, and this lively and energetic band made you
want to foot-stomp and get down. Indeed, during almost the entire 2-hour
performance, young children were seen right in front of the stage
dancing with frenzy and much stamina. Some concert-goers thought these
kids were part of the act, but spontaneity and informality are hallmarks
of this amazing place.
What
grabs you most when you hear The Delta Jets is the raw soulful sounds
of instrument and vocals; the two are seemingly interchangeable. Playing
Delta Swamp Blues, this band is hot! Featuring Dale Anderson on vocals,
guitar and slide guitar, bass, ukelele, and baritone ukelele, with Joe
Vanesky on harmonica, percussion, and vocals and David Will on drums,
washboard, percussion, and vocals, they play a wonderful, nasty,
swamp/grunge sort of blues that your mama never told you about!
This summer season's ear candy at the Peg
Egan Performing Arts Center in Egg Harbor kicks off this coming Sunday
evening, June 26, at 7:00 pm. Bring your lawn chairs, dinner, beverage,
blanket, kids, dog and enjoy the first of many fine concerts!
Performing on the center's breathtaking stage will be BeauSoleil
avec Michael Doucet. Michael is the founder of this cajun band. Read up on Michael's great career on the fiddle: Michael Doucet on Wikipedia.
Gloria
Attoun returns to the Woodwalk Concert series on Friday, June 24 at
7:00 pm. Gloria delighted the audience a few years ago as part of the
Wise Women concert! Traveling from the little river town of Augusta,
Missouri, Gloria will perform solo.
She sings original songs about the magical and mundane moments of life
and will bring along a couple of guitars, a banjo, a harmonica or two
and a whole bunch of other stuff she's gathered up to make this evening
enjoyable, unforgettable and fun.
An evening with Gloria is not so much a performance, but an experience
as she blurs the boundaries of audience and performer and conjures up an evening of shared and memorable experiences.
The Pink Classic Golf Event will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Horseshoe Bay Golf Course in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.
The event includes a four-person golf scramble with registration beginning at 8:00 am and a shotgun start at 9:00 am. At 1:30 pm guests will gather at the clubhouse for live music by Big Mouth Band featuring the Power Tool Horns, food and drinks, a raffle and live auction.
Singer, Song-writer, Performer, and Artist, Jeanne Kuhns presents her Woodwalk Concert Series once again this season. On tap is a wonderful variety of musical talent, including her son Eli Mattson, Door County's own piano man.
All performances are at 7:00 pm and the admission price is $15 at the door. The Woodwalk Gallery and Events Barn is located at 6746 County G near Egg Harbor.
Lynn Gudmundsen and David Hatch, two of Door County's most popular musicians, will release their first CD later this month. "Beginnings" is an eclectic mix of acoustic classic rock, light jazz, Irish fiddle, and a touch of classic. Artists George Sawyn, Hans Christian, and Patrick Palmer are also featured on the CD.
Two villages in Door County have been awarded top honors in the Wisconsin's 12 Best Towns contest as selected by the readers of Wisconsin Trails magazine. Egg Harbor was voted best small town and Fish Creek was chosen as the best picture-taking town.
The awards for the state's 12 best towns were recently announced by editor Kristen Scheuing in conjunction with the release of latest issue of Wisconsin Trails magazine. A 6-page article in the May/June 2011 issue highlights the 12 winners, including both Egg Harbor and Fish Creek in their respective categories.
Time to mark the calendar for another festival happening
this summer in Door County! This one is for the Town of Egg Harbor. Not
to be confused with the Village of Egg Harbor, the "town" is actually
the township of Egg Harbor and encompasses quite a bit of rural area
adjacent to the village and beyond.
This event is the official Sesquicentennial Celebration commemorating the founding of the
Town of Egg Harbor. There will be a parade starting at 10:00 am, food, fun and games. In
celebration of the Town of Egg Harbor's 150th birthday, local bands will
perform at the Town Hall, located on County I, just one mile east of
Carlsville.
A
dog park in Egg Harbor by the end of 2011 will be a reality if a
just-launched fundraising effort is successful. Kathy Navis and Nancy
Fisher are spearheading a drive to raise $20,000 to complete Harbor
Hounds Dog Park after a conditional use permit was granted by the
Village of Egg Harbor. The land is an unused portion of Village View
Park, on the corner of Church Street and Harbor School Road. Approximate
dimensions are 100' wide by 375' deep. The conditional use permit
demands a six-foot fence surrounding the park, together with benches and
a small shelter.
The Peg Egan Performing Arts Center is thrilled to announce
a crowd-pleasing line-up of nationally acclaimed artists for its 2011 Summer
Sunset Concert Series.
Performing on the center's breathtaking stage will be BeauSoleil
avec Michael Doucet, the Saline Fiddlers, Taj Weekes & Adowa, Five by
Design, 100% Natural, Harry Manx, Shout Sister Shout and the Best of the Big
Top Chautauqua.
Located in Eames Cherry View Park in Egg Harbor, Wis., the
outdoor amphitheater offers sweeping views of scenic landscape and sunset over
the harbor and has ground room for 2,000 visitors; bringing blankets or lawn
chairs is recommended.
What's first on the agenda today? ... page through the
cookbooks and magazines for tonight's dinner, then choose an appropriate
wine? ... or peruse the shelves at the local wine shop and make a
selection, then pick an entree. Today, the wine selection wins top
billing. Come to discover that it was a good decision.
As I walked the wine aisle looking at labels, blends, domestics,
imports, and price I settled on a Malbec. Almost always a stable
selection, and this was to be no exception. Malbecs tend to be
consistent and usually a crowd pleaser.
My selection was a 2008 DURIGUTTE MALBEC from Mendoza, Argentina. It's
the crown prince of wines in Argentina and seems to have hit the jackpot
making its mark in the world of wine. The grape was originally brought
to Argentina in the 19th century from France where it reigned supreme
and is still grown today.
Dear Skipper: Do
you know where the best places to swim are in Door County? Being an
otter, I thought you might know where some good spots are. I bet you're a
great swimmer too. My family is coming to Door County in June, and we
are staying at the Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor. They have indoor and
outdoor pools there, which will be fun, but my little sister and I want
to find a beach where we can swim and maybe build a sand castle. Thank
you Skipper for answering and I love your new column! Jason W., Grade 5, Appleton
On
December 21, 2010 the Village of Egg Harbor achieved the status of a
Bronze Water Star Community. This award recognizes that the Village of
Egg Harbor has taken actions to protect its important water resources
and has met criteria established by Water Star Wisconsin. Water Star is
designed to honor municipalities who do outstanding work to provide
their communities with safe and abundant groundwater; lakes and streams
protected from polluted runoff; maintain and enhance desirable aquatic
habitats; and provide appropriate recreational opportunities for their
citizenry.
Egg Harbor has been awarded a "Best of" award for 2010!

Jacobs, Door County Publishing Company, presents Jeff Larson, president
of the Egg Harbor Business Association, with the '2010 Best of' award
to Egg Harbor for the Best Fireworks Display as determined by the
readers of Door County Magazine.
A
new winter festival is coming to Door County! It will take place in Egg
Harbor, known for Pumpkin Patch Festival, New Year's Parade, and Frosty Fest. Including
an ice fishing tournament, snowmobile poker run and dance, Winter
Harbor Madness will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011, Martin Luther
King Jr. weekend.
The Egg Harbor New Year's Parade has been a happening for over thirty years. How many places have a parade on such a day? Isn't that day reserved for football, recovery from New Year's Eve, and generally schlepping around at home and accomplishing little? Not so in the charming village of
EggHarbor, Wisconsin, a place which suddenly comes to life on January 1 in the early afternoon. In fact, it celebrates life,
DoorCounty style. So how did this parade get its start? A short history lesson begins the story of one of Wisconsin's most interesting parades.
Door
County will soon have a brand new festival to add to the ever-growing
roster of fun things to do on the Peninsula. Granted, there are not many
festivals and the like during the winter months, but over the past
decades the list has grown.
Egg Harbor's new Frosty Fest is the
latest foray into the concept of a winter gathering in this magical
place. It's actually not a brand new offering for this particular day in
this particular village. For more than 30 years, Egg Harbor has hosted a
New Years Parade.
Edgewood Orchard Galleries recently
learned that their benefit cookbook, An
Artist's Food for the Soul, will be included in the Paris Cookbook Fair to
be held March 3-6, 2011 in Paris, France. Anne Emerson and daughter Nell
Jarosh, who produced the cookbook with graphic designer and photographer Dan
Cross of Idea Studio, have no idea how the cookbook came to the attention of
the organizers of the show. This is the first year the annual international
fair will have a special section for charity cookbooks.
Three venues have been scheduled for "A Renaissance
Christmas" program on December 10, 11, and 12. Performed by the Chicago
Early Music Consort, this program features English music.
The concert schedule is:
Friday,
December 10 at Bjorklunden in Baileys Harbor. A wine and hors d'oeuvres
reception, along with a silent auction, starts at 5:00, followed by a
catered dinner by Alexander's at 6:00. The concert is immediately after
dinner where you can sip on wine and munch on wonderful desserts!
Saturday, December 11 at Shepherd of the Bay in Ellison Bay, 7:00 pm.
Sunday, December 12 at Birch Creek Music Performance Center - Juniper Hall, Egg Harbor, 2:00 pm.
Children and their families descend upon the Landmark Resort every year on the day after Thanksgiving to spend some time with Santa Claus and to enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet along with this famous guy. The event is a tradition that highlights Egg Harbor's Holly Days, which includes a tree lighting in Harbor View Park late Friday afternoon.
A grant of $319,000 was awarded to the Village of Egg Harbor by the Wisconsin Waterways Commission at its meeting in Wausau on October 26. Attending the meeting earlier this week were village trustee Mike Fitzgerald, harbor master Steve Smith, and village administrator Josh Van Lieshout.
