Warm Light Cool Shadows - May 2, 2012 - 8:40:00 AM
weborgs-dock-dpw-_1_.jpg
"The Old Fish House at Weborgs" by Bonnie Paruch.
Whenever I teach I'm always asked "what are the rules for painting"? One of the few tried and true "rules" I can come up with is the fact that warm hued light produces cool shadows, and conversely, cool light produces warm shadows. Remember, it's all relative to the relationships of color and light that are established by the painting and by paying attention to the natural effects of light on objects.

In my workshops I often do a demonstration with a yellow, red, blue and green light. It's a great way to see the effect of light in relationship to the complements we see in the color wheel.

Your group can "Adopt-a-Highway" in Door County.
Spring has sprung early, and many of Wisconsin’s volunteer Adopt-a-Highway (AAH) crews are springing into action, picking up a winter’s worth of unsightly trash along state highways. Along with helping keep our roadsides clean and green, Wisconsin’s dedicated AAH workers make the state an even more attractive destination for travelers while saving taxpayer dollars. Last year, Wisconsin AAH groups picked up over 156 tons of trash that was then disposed of by county highway crews.

"Faith at Rest" behind Charlie's Fish House! 6 x 8 oil on panel.
Last week I spent a glorious afternoon painting up in Gills Rock. I've already posted about the creation of the painting "The Last Ice at Garrett Bay". What I didn't discuss then was that my original intention was to see if any of the fishing boats were in their "summer spot" behind Charlie's Fish House. I really wanted to paint an old boat called "Faith".

Cruise to the Historic Townsite of Fayette - Jul 6, 2011 - 8:36:18 AM
ferry_1_F_700_1.jpg
Island Clipper
On July 17, the Island Clipper will set sail to the historic townsite of Fayette, Michigan. Once a bustling industrial community that manufactured charcoal pig iron between 1867 and 1891, Fayette offers visitors the unmatched serenity of a Lake Michigan harbor, white cliffs and verdant forests. This well-preserved museum village recalls another time when it was a noisy, dirty company town with an immigrant population that shared daily hardships, joys and sorrows.

Named after Fayette Brown, the Jackson Iron Company agent who chose the site, Fayette was once one of the Upper Peninsula's most productive iron-smelting operations. Located on the Garden Peninsula at Snail Shell Harbor, Fayette grew up after the Civil War around two blast furnaces, a large dock and several charcoal kilns.

Coffee and Art Come Together at GT Coffee in Gills Rock - May 24, 2011 - 8:55:27 AM

Coffee shop owners, cousins Sarah and Katie Janquart
All coffee shops have a personality, and GT Coffee's personality is evident before you even walk in the door. There is art on the porch and walls; and in addition to a sign announcing 'GT Coffee' there is a big sign that says 'ART'. It's easy to spot this place, since there is a large flag flying on the west side of Hwy. 42 with the word 'ART' on it. The gray and white building makes it the perfect display for the interesting and visually arresting outside art available in the gallery.

Washington Island Ferry Beckons All Year Long - May 17, 2011 - 7:50:00 AM
bikers.jpg
Get ready to board the ferry!
Door County is surrounded by islands. Washington Island has year round residents. Chambers Island near Fish Creek has a seasonal population and still others (Horseshoe, Cana, Pilot and Plum) have a deep history of navigation and fresh water drama. Hat, Hog and Spider Islands are home to cormorants and the hardiest, scraggliest plants in the upper Midwest.

It's Washington Island, with a close-knit community, which is bursting at the seams with art, music, theater and good food during every season, which makes it a must see no matter what the weather. A ferry runs once a day in the winter, so a winter stay can be put on your to-do list.
But, it's the summer when the Island is at its most welcoming.

Gills Rock - Door County's Jumping-off Place - Aug 11, 2009 - 7:45:20 AM
karen_1_F_700.jpg
Be sure to visit the docks at Gills Rock!
At the very northern end of the Door Peninsula lies Gills Rock, which some have dubbed the jumping-off place because it is surrounded by water on three sides and kind of looks like the end of the world.  Actually, this little hamlet was originally named Hedgehog Harbor, and the harbor still bears that name.  The postmaster general of the United States wrote the local postmaster, Gottlieb Voight, that Hedgehog Harbor wouldn't fit on a stamp and asked him to rename the village.
