Owner Scott Dell, along with his baker wife, Belkis, opened the shop three years ago after moving with their kids from the Madison area. “My wife is a fourth generation baker. I’m a first generation [baker], so I just get to hang out and sample her things” Scott jokes. Belkis’ former generations of bakeries include a store in New York and abroad in the Dominican Republic. It is with this family knowledge and recipes that she makes these wonderful cheesecakes. Available in typically popular (turtle and chocolate) and some more unique (lemon and strawberry lime) options, and constantly changing varieties, these dense morsels are made fresh daily on site at the shop’s neighboring kitchen. Dell’s mantra about ingredients used in the food: “everything is homemade, fresh, and natural.” And their most popular signature is without doubt the classic New York Cheesecake. “The New York is very good, having owned a bakery there; our recipe is a true New York style” Dell explains. With face pressed against the glass display case, one can order cheesecake by the slice, a “mini” smaller cake fit for two, or a “bite,” a
But if there wasn’t enough to dwell on with cheesecakes, the et cetera portion of the shop comes into play. And like their slogan says, it is “a whole lot of etc.” Featuring “light dining” options, such as house made soups, salads, and sandwiches, customers can enjoy a savory meal and a sweet ending. Another menu item that stands out are their specialty cheese breads, in various mild or spicy blends of local cheeses with almost one pound of it baked into each loaf. A large selection of specialty ice cream flavors beyond the standard vanilla, chocolate and strawberry offers a variety everyone can find something they haven’t had before. In addition, there is fresh brewed coffee, ground by the cup. The Dell family also has specialty options to meet dietary needs while still satisfying those sugary cravings. There are sugar-free and dairy-free flavors of their ice cream, and their cheesecakes can be ordered gluten- or sugar-free as well. To enjoy the delicacies, you do not have to travel far. With free wireless internet access indoors and spacious and pet-friendly outdoor seating, they provide several cozy settling places to relax.
There is an attentiveness in the shop to blend local quality products with time-tested family recipes. For instance, while some of the wine selection pairs better with food, they also offer bottles from the oldest winery in Wisconsin, Algoma’s von Stiehl. It is with this balance that the store is eclectic and not scattered. The family-owned attitude of the store reflects how the owners envision their customers enjoying their food. Scott Dell says he wishes people walk into a “warm, friendly, and family-oriented atmosphere. Visit Cheesecake, Etc.
