The organization, which has built or financed a total of over 100 homes worldwide, is excited about its continued impact on the affordable housing inventory both locally and internationally. The dedication celebration represents the completion of one of four projects started in Door County this year. In July, Habitat painted its first home through the A Brush With Kindness Program, helping a disabled veteran and his wife to beautify and make minor repairs to their home and garage. A second A Brush With Kindness painting project was finished in September for a 94 year old legally blind widow whose home in Sturgeon Bay had not been painted for fifteen years. In late September we finished our first whole house remodel which was also our first Women Build project. Habitat’s efforts are not confined to Northeastern Wisconsin, however. Door County Habitat for Humanity’s tithe has helped with the construction of over 70 homes outside of the United States since 1995. In February of this year, our first Global Village team helped to build a home for a disabled man and his family in Puerto Lempira, Honduras. A second trip to the same community is planned for February of 2012. The December 21st dedication reflects the ongoing partnership between Door County Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is again providing 75% of the funding for this home as part of the Habitat for Humanity-Thrivent Financial for Lutherans partnership to build affordable homes across the nation. Through this partnership, over 2,000 homes have been built by the two organizations over the past five years. In Door County, this 33rd Habitat home represents the fourth year in a row that a home is being built with support from both organizations. And the cooperation does not stop there: We have received word that we will again be building a home in 2012 with assistance from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Our 33rd home was started in late July and took just over 30 volunteer days to complete. Over 3,500 volunteer hours went into the successful completion of this project. Over 95% of all the building materials used in the home were purchased in Door County and generous local and national donors provided over $9,800 of in-kind donations and volunteer labor. While our 2011 construction season has come to a close, other Habitat activities continue. The ReStore, which celebrated two years of successful operation in November of this year, continues to generate widespread community interest and support. The successful electronic waste recycling program begun earlier this year through the ReStore has filled four semi trailers with computers, televisions and other items. The annual fruitcake bake changed venues this year, moving after 13 years from Sevastopol School to NWTC, but produced another 1200 cakes in late October. And, we are already in the planning mode for next year, with the construction of house number 34 planned for April and several A Brush With Kindness projects slated to start in June. As we continue to build with our partner families, we encourage the public to consider the many ways that they might support this worthwhile affordable housing program.
