ARSENIC AND OLD LACE by
Joseph Kesselring
Performed by the Island Players. Directed by Howard Scott and Produced by Joyce Morehouse, fourteen Island
Players perform this highly amusing and wicked tale.
Vintage Postcard, Sturgeon Bay Lifesaving Station.
Crews
on the Great Lakes stations consisted of a keeper and eight surfmen.
The surfmen were ranked based on their experience and ability, with the
number one surfman being the most senior; he filled in for the keeper
when he was away from the station. These positions also indicated where
they sat in the boat as it went out to rescue and which side of the
beach apparatus they stood (odd on the left, even on the right).
The station ran in an organized and efficient manner, with frequent
visits from USLSS inspectors to assure perfection. One of the keeper’s
responsibilities was training the crew.
Winter
is rapidly approaching so it seems appropriate the Door County Maritime
Museum’s 2011-2012 Speaker Series kicks off Tuesday night, Nov. 29,
with Richard Purinton presenting a program centered on winters on
Washington Island.
This
initial program on Nov. 29 will provide an excellent holiday shopping
opportunity with the museum’s gift shop open for business and a book
signing opportunity with the evening’s featured speaker.
Purinton,
who serves as the CEO for the family-run Washington Island Ferry Line,
is an award-winning author, having penned three books related to the
Island.

A
Visitor Center has opened within the terminal building at Northport, a
space that had operated the previous 25 years as Northport Pier
Restaurant.
The dining room
tables and chairs have been replaced with display kiosks for
photographs, information and literature related to Washington and Rock
Islands and the islands of Death's Door. This shift in direction may
surprise some visitors, especially those who recall memorable meals
served at the Northport Pier Restaurant over that time period, but
according to Hoyt Purinton, Ferry Line President, the new direction in
the face of ever-declining restaurant activity is meant to support
island tourism as a whole.
Door County is surrounded by islands. Washington Island has year round residents. Chambers Island near Fish Creek has a seasonal population and still others (Horseshoe, Cana, Pilot and Plum) have a deep history of navigation and fresh water drama. Hat, Hog and Spider Islands are home to cormorants and the hardiest, scraggliest plants in the upper Midwest.
It's Washington Island, with a close-knit community, which is bursting at the seams with art, music, theater and good food during every season, which makes it a must see no matter what the weather. A ferry runs once a day in the winter, so a winter stay can be put on your to-do list.
But, it's the summer when the Island is at its most welcoming.
Washington Island is a special place. But many Door County visitors miss it completely, perhaps due to time limitations or simply since it is off the beaten path. It is a bit of a hike to get all the way to the northern end of the Peninsula. Then, unless you have your own nautical transportation, you'll take either the car ferry or the passenger ferry across to the island from Gills Rock or Northport.
So why is this small, rural place so special? You'll find out if you visit. Maybe it's the quietness and slower pace. Maybe it's the people. Maybe it's a lot of factors that make the island unique.
