We are looking for a few freelance writers who would be able to provide content for this web site. The writer should be very familiar with the Door County Peninsula. The ideal contributor would be a person who has lived in the area for some time and has experienced much of what the county has to offer its visitors, seasonal residents, and full-time residents. Although a journalism background or degree is desirable, strong writing skills with a flair for the offbeat and the unusual would be of interest to us.
This site features people and places that may not be covered in the mainstream press or visitor guides. Interview skills will be useful in gathering the information needed to write a successful piece. Features and stories may include photos whenever possible, and will run for a period of time in the current edition for a given town before being placed in an archive which is highly visible and easily accessed by the internet visitor.
Door County Travelers Journal has a personal journal/story-telling slant that often relates the personal experiences of the individual writer. Since the web site is divided into sections by town, it makes sense that each writing piece focuses on or is relevant to a particular town, city, village, or specific area. Historical writing is also appropriate for content on this site, since it helps visitors better understand our heritage.
Features and stories that do not fit well into this web site will be considered for inclusion in our sister web site, AllThingsDoorCounty.com. That site's flavor is more of a straightforward guide to help tourists plan their Door County experience. Specific areas for which we require content for that site are: dining and other eating places, festivals, galleries, golf, lighthouses, music, theater, outdoors, shopping, wineries, sailing, canoeing, cross county skiing, hiking, parasailing, geocaching, beachcombing, camping, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, bird watching, bicycling, kayaking, jet skiing, swimming, minigolf, and many others.
We're also very interested in providing a place for young authors to publish their writing. Specifically, our hope is that children residing in Door County will provide valuable insights about their area from their own perspective. At the same time, children can see their writing published and share it with distant family, friends, and relatives by way of this web site. We'll consider non-fiction, fiction, and poetry submissions by kids of all ages. There are already some examples of children's writing in the current editions. The Kids Edition is specifically set aside for writing by children for children visiting the area.
Writers of all ages can get in touch with us via email by clicking here. Tell us what you'd like to write about and where it might fit into this publication. We prefer to be granted exclusive rights to stories and photos, but we'll consider other arrangements under which to publish your work. So polish up your literary skills and think Door County!
Your comments are always welcome as we continue exploring Door County ... on and off the beaten path.
