What do you get when you put together three young local girls with a heart for serving others and a food pantry that needs help? You get a great idea for helping Door County residents remember the SOUP in Super Bowl and the importance of helping others! Grace Hubbard, Sabrina Rittle and Rooke Knapton, from Hope United Church of Christ’s Middle Grade Sunday School class have been working hard for a month to pull off their SOUPer Bowl of Caring Project that will culminate on Sunday, February 26.

While the Door Peninsula certainly offers a rich historical background for residents and visitors alike, it’s rare for history to come in the form of a living landmark. Mr. Herbert Hardt, Sr. is one of these rarities and has reached the century milestone of life and love in Door County.

I first met Herb while presenting a talk at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ephraim, where he was in attendance. It only took a moment in Herb’s presence to succumb to the richness of his life’s experiences, keen intellect, quick and humorous wit and, above all, his compassionate heart.

My favorite part of cleaning a bathroom is spraying the mirror and wiping it clean. Last week, as I was completing this task for the thousandth time, it occurred to me why I like that job so much. Let me explain.

Like any normal person, I make mistakes (gasp!). Although I do wish that I could make perfect decisions all the time, I know that every mistake I make teaches me one of many important lessons. The lessons differ from one another, but one thing that I learn every time is that no matter how big the mistake is- or how many people are hurt by that mistake- that I can just pick myself up, dust myself off and start all over again. Clean slate.

Time puzzles me. Last week, a dear friend, a long-ago love, sent me a long-forgotten photo of a young man. It turned out to be me, age 17, 1968. I didn’t even recognize this young man at first. He is long gone, a different person today, in both looks and spirit, at age 61. (However, that boyish smile and life-embracing elan still come through, don’t you think?)

A month ago, a friend and member of our church family was a seemingly healthy women in her 60s. She felt a little off, went to the doctor, was diagnosed with leukemia, and died last week. Gone in an instant. Sure, such things happen all the time. Still, I do not think I will ever truly get my arms around the understanding part.

Sturgeon Bay, Marinette and Oshkosh businesses and residents were represented at the Strictly Sail Chicago Boat Show held on January 26-29. Of course, sailboats use wind power to cross great distances, but now can use solar power to run electronics, and bottom paints that don’t foul the water while repelling weeds. A few booths presented unique ideas or used materials made in the USA.

A group of local actors from across the peninsula is in rehearsal for a new style dinner-theater show in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

“All Over But the Shooting” is a fun, campy play in true dinner theatre, “whodunit” fashion. The audience is invited to participate and help solve the mystery, as cast members mingle. The audience members who correctly guess “whodunit” will be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate prize at each performance.

On Friday, February 17, associate conductor Stephen Alltop and soprano/violinist Josefien Stoppelenburg will present a program entitled "The Music of Jane Austen" as part of the Peninsula Music Festival’s annual February Fest. The 7:00 p.m. concert will take place at the Ephraim Moravian Church. This will be a program of romance, humor and beautiful music celebrating the 200th anniversary of the printing of Sense and Sensibility, featuring composers loved by Jane Austen complimented by Stephen Alltop's historical narrative. Jane Austen played the piano every day and this concert will highlight the music she loved and the music she played. The program includes the music of Beethoven, Schubert, Clementi, Handel and much more. There will be a reception immediately following the concert.

The Door Community Auditorium goes “down under” next weekend with a screening of the Australian-centered film Rabbit-Proof Fence, as well as concert and lecture by Brian Pertl, didgeridoo expert from Lawrence University.

In 2011, the Ice Out raft started floating at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. When do you think it will float this year?

Ross Dippel has been named by the Door Shakespeare Board of Directors as Interim Artistic Director. Mr. Dippel brings with him many years of classical theatre experience as an actor, director, educator, producer, and professional fight choreographer. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse, and a Master of Fine Arts in Classical Theatre from the prestigious Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy of Classical Acting at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Professional memberships include Actor’s Equity Association and The Society of American Fight Directors.

In light of some of the comments we’ve seen and heard concerning the design of the proposed Maritime Observation Tower, I thought it might be beneficial to offer some additional background information. First and foremost, the Maritime Museum desires the design to be both striking and blend architecturally with the maritime appearance of the existing building. The design is intended to remind the visitor/viewer of several historic tower structures prevalent on the Great Lakes and important to the maritime heritage and history of the area. It will incorporate architectural elements found in maritime signal towers, lighthouses, and the watch towers integral to the life-saving stations that dotted the shoreline.

Bad day?

I don’t know about you, but every day, I tend to judge and assess the day. I do this by myself, as well as when anyone asks, “How are you today?” as I go through some mental left-side, right-side inventory of good stuff, bad stuff.

But isn’t every day a blessing, a gift from God? Sure, we may not always see it as such (this past month, one friend had a stroke; another was diagnosed with leukemia, so I suspect neither one of them is all that thrilled with these blessings), but it is all in God’s hands. If He is good, He is good all the time. So, even if something makes no sense to us, that does not mean that it makes no sense.

Fourteen pounds of petite perfection! This is MADDIE, the Min-Pin/Rat Terrier mix who has captured the hearts of the entire shelter staff.

Maddie is less than a year old, and smart as all get out. She was surrendered by a family because the combination of puppy + small children was just a bit overwhelming. Maddie was spayed last week and she’s received all her vaccinations.

Come meet and fall in love with Maddie.

The Door County Maritime Museum’s Speaker Series continues on Thursday, Feb. 2, with a topic that is always of interest to Door County residents and particularly those in the Sturgeon Bay area.

Gene Caldwell, Vice President and General Manager of Bay Shipbuilding Co., will present a program on current activities at the Sturgeon Bay shipyard beginning at 7 p.m. at the Sturgeon Bay museum.

Crews on the Great Lakes stations consisted of a keeper and eight surfmen. The surfmen were ranked based on their experience and ability, with the number one surfman being the most senior; he filled in for the keeper when he was away from the station. These positions also indicated where they sat in the boat as it went out to rescue and which side of the beach apparatus they stood (odd on the left, even on the right).

The station ran in an organized and efficient manner, with frequent visits from USLSS inspectors to assure perfection. One of the keeper’s responsibilities was training the crew.

Hans Christian Concert at Third Avenue Playhouse to Benefit United Way

Hans Christian to perform February 14.

Third Avenue Playhouse is launching a new series called Tuesdays at TAP. Every Tuesday there will be a concert at TAP to benefit a local nonprofit. This series starts on February 14th and the featured nonprofit is United Way of Door County.

The concert starts at 7:30 pm. The artist is Hans Christian. Hans Christian’s unmistakable cello playing moves the listener with a haunting beauty, and his use of various ethnic string instruments expresses a universal musical language that transcends boundaries, cultures, and generations. This concert is a kick-off to appearances around the world.

Annual Crowd Favorite “Door County Idol” Returns to Auditorium

On Saturday, February 11, at 7 p.m., six Door County teens will compete for the title of 2012 Door County Idol. This highly anticipated annual event serves as both a vibrant community gathering and as a celebration of Door County’s abundant homegrown talent.

From dozens of auditioning students, Door County Idol screeners have chosen six finalists for this year’s competition.
