Doris Gets the Bug to Visit Pumpkin Patch

Yes, Doris got the bug to get up to Pumpkin Patch and see what's what at this major Door County festival. In fact, she found herself decorated with all kinds of nasty pumpkin bugs on the first day of Egg Harbor's Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival. She spent the two-day extravaganza at the Dovetail Gallery on the north end of the village.

Egg Harbor's Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival is one of the best events in Door County for kids. It's held the first weekend of each October in downtown Egg Harbor. Going strong now for about two decades, Pumpkin Patch seems to have become synonymous with colorful fall fun on the Peninsula. People come from all over the Midwest and beyond, year after year, to soak in the feeling this busy event imbues. They eat, play, relax, and depart with cheer. Children are major participants in this festival.

Kids truly love Pumpkin Patch Festival, plain and simple. Why?

Doris Takes First in Class at Bayland Classic Car Show

Doris got herself all gussied up and traveled over to the annual Bayland Classic Car Show at Jim Olson Motors in Sturgeon Bay. Over fifty vehicles of all kinds and vintages entered the competition. There was everything from cars of the early part of the century to modern-day modified cars, trucks, and motorcycles. It was a very hot day but Doris sat in the sun like a princess and charmed her admirers.

A clown making balloons spells great kid fun!

Jefferson Street in Sturgeon Bay is the venue for a small but fun Saturday festival in July. On the city's northside, this street has a large number of small shops and galleries on both sides, often referred to as the Jefferson Street Shops. You can't miss them if you're headed out of town, since this is the main drag and flows into Egg Harbor Road and then back to Highway 42/57 north. It doesn't take a long time to capture the essence of the fest.

People Wave on Washington Island

Washington Island is a special place. But many Door County visitors miss it completely, perhaps due to time limitations or simply since it is off the beaten path. It is a bit of a hike to get all the way to the northern end of the Peninsula. Then, unless you have your own nautical transportation, you'll take either the car ferry or the passenger ferry across to the island from Gills Rock or Northport.

So why is this small, rural place so special? You'll find out if you visit. Maybe it's the quietness and slower pace. Maybe it's the people. Maybe it's a lot of factors that make the island unique.

Olde Stone Quarry Park A Local Treasure

A little bit off the beaten path is one of Door County's parks called Olde Stone Quarry County Park. It's located just south of Little Harbor on Bay Shore Drive (County B) in the Town of Sevastopol. It's within ten minutes of Sturgeon Bay. This little gem underwent a major renovation back in 2005, and it became a first class boat landing with amenities that make it a great place for a variety of seasonal activities.

The Heart of Tourist Life - Fish Creek

Fish Creek is at the heart of tourist life on the Peninsula. Along with Ephraim, it is pretty much the most centrally located area for the hustle bustle of shops, restaurants, and places to see. Approaching from the south on Route 42, you'll come down the steep hill into town. Turn left for Founder's Square and the White Gull Inn, turn right for most of the downtown shops, and go straight to the bayfront and marina area. There is a public parking lot near Founder's Square, or you may find a place right on the main drag, which is Route 42.

Village of History: Baileys Harbor

Baileys Harbor is a village of buildings on the National Register of Historical Places.

In 1848, Captain Justice Bailey piloted his ship into what is now Baileys Harbor to avoid a storm. Captain Bailey worked for Alanson Sweet, who owned a fleet of ships which transported lumber and stone to Detroit. Captain Bailey took samples of pine, maple, beech, and Door County stone back to his employer, who saw possibilities for those products.

Ephraim epitomizes the essence of Door County. Along with Fish Creek, it is at the center of tourist life. It has a certain storybook charm with the town nicely wrapped around its primary waterfront, Eagle Harbor. Children and their families descend upon the Landmark Resort every year on the day after Thanksgiving to spend some time with Santa Claus and to enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet along with this famous guy. The event is a tradition that highlights Egg Harbor's Holly Days, which includes a tree lighting in Harbor View Park late Friday afternoon. Holly Days festivities continue in downtown Egg Harbor on Saturday with horse-drawn wagon rides and visiting time with Santa at the Main Street Shops, among other activities for kids and families.

Gelato, or literally, Double Delites in Egg Harbor

According to Wikipedia, Gelato, or the plural Gelati, is Italian ice cream made from milkand sugar, combined with other flavorings . The gelato ingredients (after an optional pasteurization ) are frozen while stirring to break up ice crystals as they form. Like high end ice cream, gelato generally has less than 35% air - resulting in a dense and extremely flavorful product. The name comes from the Italian word gelare, meaning "to freeze".

Birch Creek Musicians Jazz Up Settlement Fair

The Fourth Annual Settlement Shops Fine Art Fair went off with a flair this year. The Ambassador Jazz Combo from Birch Creek played. And they played well, especially considering these seven teenage boys had only performed music together for a week or so!

A colorful event it was!

The event was held on Saturday, August 4 under sunny skies and fairly warm temperatures. Art and food vendors lined the courtyard between the lodging building of this property and the permanent (although primarily seasonal) retail businesses that offer anything from books to cherry pies.

Bravo for The Bistro!

You don't need to take a trip to Paris or the Gold Coast of Chicago to find a little eating place that fits the usual definition of the word "bistro". There's one right in Egg Harbor, and it's convenient, upscale (but not particularly pricey), and it's the new kid on the block.

The Bistro at Liberty Square is now open in Egg Harbor. It's at the southern end of downtown. A few years ago this same location was home to a small diner with a 50's motif, complete with a couple of classic cars parked out front. Now, under new ownership and totally remodeled, it's an attractive, airy, and sparkling clean eating place and more.
