Novel Ideas is the book shop in Baileys Harbor, about to start its sixth year of making that “portable magic” with hardcover and paperback books available to residents and visitors alike, as well as a plethora of games, cards, music, mugs, puzzles, and calendars.

This Tuna is Not a Fish

Gorgeous coat and green eyes!

Please don’t say “Sorry, Charlie” to this lovely lady cat named TUNA.

She’s a green-eyed, dark tortoiseshell girl, 2-4 years of age. Tuna has had a roller coaster ride the last two years, so the shelter staff is hoping for long-term stability at her forever home.

Originally brought to Door County Humane Society by the Sturgeon Bay police in later 2010, Tuna was adopted several months later and went home to Green Bay. Then she came back to the Humane Society in February 2012 when her family had a baby.

Pirates Exhibit Opens at Door County Maritime Museum

Pirates exhibit opens.

The Door County Maritime Museum has yet to match the success it enjoyed with the “Pirates!” exhibit in 2007 when it smashed all attendance records at the Sturgeon Bay museum. Now exhibit curator Jon Paul Van Harpen is back and so are the pirates to provide an exhibit that the museum promises is better than its predecessor.

“Pirates – Ship to Shore” opens to the public on Saturday, May 19, at the Sturgeon Bay museum

Jacksonport Celebrates 40 Years of Maifest

It will be a weekend of milestones in Jacksonport on Memorial Day weekend this year as the community prepares for the 40th annual Maifest celebration, scheduled for Saturday May 26 and Sunday May 27, 2012. Since 1973, the community has hosted Door County’s unofficial summer kickoff festival along the lakeshore at Lakeside Park, located at the intersection of County V and Highway 57.

Event highlights include the grand parade at 10:30 AM on Saturday, a juried arts and crafts fair beginning at 9 AM both days, live music in the performance tent both days, the Maifest 10K and 2 mile fun run at 9 AM on Sunday and the Frontier Farmers Horsepull begins at 1 PM on Sunday at the ball park.

Sister Bay Marina, located in Northern Door County, has gone through a complete transformation. Those who haven’t been to Sister Bay recently may find it hard to recognize the waterfront park and newly expanded marina that now boasts more slips and amenities than any other in Northern Door County.

“The new marina means a greater maritime experience for both visitors and residents of Sister Bay,” commented Robert Kufrin, Sister Bay Village Administrator.

This past week I got my hands in the dirt and planted. First time in nearly ten years. This past week I saw spring in all its explosive-color glory. Again, first time in nearly ten years. I’d almost forgotten the miracle of seeing seemingly dead, barren ground being transformed and renewed, roaring silently into vibrant life.

This past week I felt like God was so close I could feel His warmth; I could sense His restoring love and soul-calming peace; I could believe almost without doubt. This week, after so many, many years of roaming the barren landscape, I felt renewed, guided, restored. I felt right.

To find an old friend just in time for the spring/summer festivities is always fun. This forgotten friend is the Riesling. Traditionally, the Riesling is not one of my favorites. Some of the previously sampled have been so sweet and a quick judgment was made on my part. Shame on me.

The Riesling can be a terribly misunderstood wine and judged accordingly. Rieslings can be the toast of any soiree or snubbed just as quickly.

When James Valcq and I assumed our roles as the new directors of Third Avenue Playhouse on October 1 of last year, we felt like two of the luckiest guys on Earth. We were asked to move to a place we love in order to do a job we love, leading TAP into the future. It is an exciting opportunity, but TAP is not without its challenges.

The economy has not been kind to the arts anymore than it has been to any other business or family trying to make ends meet.

I met Mary and Eric Erickson during the course of routine business in the summer of 2011. Basically, I sell houses and they wanted one. A condominium in Sister Bay, to be exact, because their family had visited Mariner’s Pointe on vacation and had fallen in love with the community and with Sister Bay in its entirety as a year-round village. During their transaction, Mary and I developed a friendship that lasted beyond the sale. Besides the fact we both have a healthy sense of humor and can text reallyreallyfast, we have one sure thing in common—we both love northern Door County.

Yo, over here. I found it! I had misplaced my simplistic, childhood faith about 45 years ago, thanks in part to a combo of pleasure-seeking teenage hormones and a smarmy know-it-all college professor in my freshman year who spoke on the existence of God … and God lost. Over time, as a seeker of truth, I eventually found God again, mostly by holding up every experience and observation of life to the Is-there-a-god-or-isn’t-there-a-god litmus test.

Whenever I teach I'm always asked "what are the rules for painting"? One of the few tried and true "rules" I can come up with is the fact that warm hued light produces cool shadows, and conversely, cool light produces warm shadows. Remember, it's all relative to the relationships of color and light that are established by the painting and by paying attention to the natural effects of light on objects.

In my workshops I often do a demonstration with a yellow, red, blue and green light. It's a great way to see the effect of light in relationship to the complements we see in the color wheel.

The shelter is very dependent upon community financing in order to fulfill its mission, and the Humane Hero initiative offers a convenient way to participate in the organization’s success. Numerous commitment levels are available to individuals or businesses with a variety of recognition awards. Monies are collected monthly via automatic credit card transaction. A Humane Hero makes an annual commitment to the cause.

The Lunch Bunch (plus a few more) decided to motor to Donny's Glidden Lodge Restaurant in Sturgeon Bay (4670 Glidden Drive, 920-746-9460, open year round). It is definitely a blast from the past, specifically 1930's. This building is all charm and character and walls that “wish they could talk”. It's a beautiful stone building situated on the shores of Lake Michigan.
